If he accepted 30k from Swansea then no reason to offer more than that.

If he wants 60k he can go to spurs and get it or come to us and prove he's worth it.If he's a star performer there's no doubt his terms would be improved before long.

Sign a 2 year deal on 30k and be certain that it needs to be renegotiated within a year.

He'd think "and what if I get injured in my first game for Liverpool?" And he'd be right to do so.

Would you really turn down an extra £1.5m a year? I'm not sure I would.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

That said if we are to hold our course in regards to wages then we should be prepared for more disappointment in the transfer window

In order to attract good / top quality players who we will no doubt face stiff competition for we will have to overpay / offer financial incentives as really we have little else to offer at this moment in time
I agree with you so far as we will have to offer lucrative contracts to top quality players if we wish to beat other teams to their signatures, I do not want to do that unless they are top quality though. I do not see Gylfi as top quality, maybe one day but, I don't want us paying huge wages for a 'maybe'. That is why I am happy with how we have conducted ourselves in this particular deal.

I wouldn't but according to his dad its not about money so really the delay in his decision making must be about playing for his boyhood team's rivals or playing for Spurs that has him in a muddle. And which one of the two is likely to be playing Champions league quicker and more often.

When it was us or Swansea it was an easy decision.

He should realise that liverpool arent scared of paying big wages because our top players earn big money but were not going to spunk money away on young players wages who arent top players yet and who may never become so.

If he delivers they will increase his wages and theres no doubt if he has a good season with us he would get a bumper pay rise. Have a clause built into your contract that if he plays 40 games and or scores / assists another 20 goals then he gets his 60k per week.

I don't think Spurs believe he's worth 60k either. Because of Buck they knew they needed a substantially better offer than ours to make the lad consider it.

Or you can choose not to believe his dad.

                It's all just second-guessing.

Indeed. We'll know soon enough when he's saying there was never any doubt about which club to join, it's a dream of his etc etc.

If it had of transpired that he accepted £30k at Swansea and despite knowing that he wanted to work again with Rodgers we came in and offered £60k then there would be uproar on here, and rightly so. It would be like the Seth Johnson situation. If we believed he wanted to join us and was happy to take £30k at Swansea then we did the right thing.

Now that Spurs are involved though I would like to think that if we did genuinely want the player that we'd offer a bit more to get our man.

It does remind me a bit of the Bellamy situiation when he first joined. He said he felt that Rafa didn't really want/need him at the club but was only signed because he was cheap and available thanks to the clause in his contract. I wonder if the club aren't entirely convinced by Sigurdsson but think he might be worth a punt at the original agreed price and even if he doesn't work out we could still end up making a small profit.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

There is a lot of competition out there now for top quality attacking players - whether they are young talents, upcoming stars, or established players. Not just from Spurs, Man city but from clubs in Russia, Ukraine, PSG, Malaga, and even China.

I think whichever bracket of players we choose to focus on, we may have to overpay in terms of wages. For example, the newspapers make a big deal about how young players prefer to go to Arsenal because of the mentoring and development they receive there. Arsenal also pay relatively high wages for young unproven talent. That is one of the reasons they dont overpay at the higher bracket and their stars leave.

So I guess either FSG overpays or come up with some innovative wage strategy along the lines of what POOLG and EL MATADOR said above where the wages are renegotiated every year or two years based on performance.

The problem is that players agents and their clients want top money from the start and still want contracts to be negotiated in couple years to milk some more money.

Idea of accepting fair and modest wages now and restructuring contact later has very little probability of happening especially as we can't offer CL football.

Personally we'll have to overpay if we want too attract decent talent or take risk on unproven young unknown players in hopes they will turn out to be good buys
