You just watch, he'll choose Spurs, then it'll come out that we matched their wage offer anyway.Originally posted by MrMichael View PostI know everyone wants us to sign somebody (preferably someone good), and Sigurdsson does have plenty of potential, but there have to be limits to the sort of deal we offer players. If Spurs have genuinely offered him £70k+/week then no way should we be matching that, its more than the lad is worth right now and the knock-on effect of paying that to someone at his stage of career on the overally wage structure at the club would be too much for me.
Not signing the guy would not signify a lack of ambition imo, it would signify finally us having got our heads on straight.

Really? I think him (well, a player like him is pretty essential tbh).Originally posted by Imy View PostHe's a luxury.
There are other positions that should be strengthened first (striker, Left back, defensive midfielder, right and left wing).
I rather us develop Suso or Teixeira, give Shelvey, Cole oe even Aqualani a chance.
Gerrard can't play 50 games a season.
Cole is dead.
Aquilani doesn't want to be here and will go.
Adam is ****e.
Spearing is ****e.
Henderson and Shelvey are steady players and will probably both go on to be good players, but they're not good enough to play every week at the moment.
Lucas is class but has been out for a long time.
Sigurdsson also scored more goals in four months at Swansea than our entire midfield put together.*
*That might not be true, but it's not far off.

I've heard City did similar with Hazard. He wanted 200k, City did not want to risk it. He is a very good talent but 200k on a player from the french league at such a young age, they were having none of it.

Ah I saw him a few times at Reading but couldn't remember him playing centrally.Originally posted by Chazza1978 View PostPlayed centrally for Reading but a bit further forward for Swansea
In fairness it's a shrewd move by Spurs. Sell Modric for £30m, rumours of VdV going back to Germany for £10m and spend £8m(ish) on Sigurdsson.
Gives them quite a lot of poke to invest in other area's of the team.

Yeah i kind of agree, we need better then what we've got, but one good year in the Premiership in a team with low expectations is not the benchmark - this time last year the flavour of the month/year was Adam.Originally posted by Lee View PostReally? We've got numbers in that attacking midfield area, the key position for me that needs strengthening is someone who can step in for/challenge Lucas.
As soon as he got injured our season went off the rails badly. We come not to play.

I can see Levy looking at doing something similar with Sigurdson as they did with ModricOriginally posted by Lee View PostAh I saw him a few times at Reading but couldn't remember him playing centrally.

Buy an attacking midfielder and convert into a midfield playmaker

I can't say that I saw loads of Sigurdsson at Reading, but at the time it was clear that he had a lot of potential and he's done very well at Swansea. He's got a lot more in his locker than Adam has (although I do agree with your concerns about buying one season wonders) - Sigurdsson is a different gravy.
Definitely agree about the Lucas thing. I've no idea who would be a realistic shout though - few better holding midfielders around than Lucas.
I think we need a LB, possibly a CB, one or two wide men, a holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder (or a box-to-box mf to save us some wedge) and probably a striker. Plus we desperately need to get rid of the dross that's hanging around.
Plenty to do but I think Rodgers will get it right.

tbh we should be signing Sigurdsen and then getting rid of Adam to cover part of the cost and wages.Originally posted by Imy View PostYeah i kind of agree, we need better then what we've got, but one good year in the Premiership in a team with low expectations is not the benchmark - this time last year the flavour of the month/year was Adam.

If we can't afford or attract the top players, we have to to take a chance on players like these, and hope one of them really fulifills their potential, if not move them on and try again.Last edited by Vermilion; 26-06-12, 09:50 PM.

That Mjolnir on YNWA again...
Well, this saga is coming to an end.
Liverpool are not willing to match Spurs bid it seems. Standing firm.
So for the first time im going to say that he wont be a Liverpool Player within a week. Deal almost dead now. Would take a hugh turnaround, for either club or player, for the deal to go through now.
Sorry if i raised some hopes. YNWAThanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
