In other words, he is trying to explain why he did something that, as a professional ref and as a law-abiding citizen, he shouldn't have done. And he is blaming his drug taking for what he said about Klopp, which also seems plausible to me. (I really dislike some of my work colleagues but do not voice that dislike and I'm pretty sure I also don't allow it to affect how I collaborate with them, so that dislike is not unprofessional.)

I do. That's why I am aiming most of my comments towards the PMGOL. PL, FA etc and asking why he (and others) were allowed to be so poor at their jobs and why some sort of care was not provided if they thought someone was struggling.


As for Coote himself, well I put in the major or minor comment as my way of sitting on the fence over his sincerity. It may well be that he was struggling with major issues or it may be that after getting caught he decided to play the poor me card.

I have no idea which one may be true or even if it is a combination of the two.

If his issues are serious then I think the man is being used as a shield for those he worked for so other issues within the organisations can be ignored.

I don't wish the man any genuine ill. I do hope if he has real issues that he gets the help he needs.

But at the same time it is difficult, rightly or wrongly, not to be a bit cynical about him, or more likely about his old paymasters, as the amount of times high profile prolonged bad behaviour gets excused when the **** hits the fan for a person is something that plays out in the media over and over and for every genuine case, of which he may well be one, there are a dozen others just trying to wriggle out of a situation of their own making.

What I am sure of though is he was very bad at his job and that drug use only brought to the surface what was already in his head.


I can have sympathy for him as a person and as such would not go in hard on him on a personal level, but none at all for him as a professional.

BBC Verify would have a field day with some of the sentences in your post. Almost Trump-like in the level of certainty expressed on things we can't possibly know to be correct.
