They signed Morata, Tevez and Llorrente for about 25 million. Vidal for 10 million. Pogba nothing. Pirlo nothing.

That is what I call being clever in the transfer market as opposed to giving Southampton close to £50m.
They should be the benchmark on how to run a club, not Arsenal.

Relegated in 2006 with a 9 point penalty. Held on to most of their stars. Came back up, won the league in 2012. Incredibly shrewd purchases. Irrespective of the outcome of the CL semi final, their performance on Tuesday was a statement they made to the rest of Europe.

I wrote a post on Juventus being the benchmark on how we should operate, but I deleted it by accident. It's so true.

Oh, and Redmen TV is boss.

Don't Juventus pay massive wages? And whatever other shonky inducements they offer.

Regardless, the point stands, we're not going to beat City, Chelsea, Arsenal or United when it comes to inducements. The transfer committee may be ****e for all kinds of other reasons but you can't blame them when one of the big payers comes over the top.

They also built their own stadium for £90m in that time.

Have to say though the downturn in Italian football has certainly helped Juve,
the fact that both Milan cubs are languishing has helped them solidify their grip at the top.

Their average wage bill is less than ours I believe.

Their transfer committee must just be fantastic then. No other reason for it.

I'd say it is.....and far less than any of the top English sides I'd suspect.

Probably only Tevez and Llorente (think Buffon is on less than usual given his age) topping out.
Probably have some advantages around tax, permits etc, but the Old Lady has done alright for herself.

Not a young side though on average I'd imagine.

Edit: probably a bit of guesswork with this list I'd say

I suspect some of those players will move on to 'bigger' clubs.

We also had Gerrard, Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling last season at a cost of around £45m.

Do you think we are a more attractive prospect to a dispassionate outsider?

If so, why? If not, why Ayre's fault?

Anyone with their head screwed on knew this was an uphill battle at best.

your missing my point. All we hear is how the club has to be clever in the transfer market when signing players and seeing how Juve do it is the benchmark as you see what they got for their money. whereas signing Lovren, Lallana and Markovic for near £60m is the polar opposite.

Also I wouldn't include Gerrard in that as he come through the Academy and we are taking about transfers.

I know missing out on players sucks. But I really dont think its a new thing specific to FSG and Ayre.

Before Twitter and the like (roughly 7 years ago maybe?) We were way more in the dark and these bits and bobs were only trickled out in the papers. So players like Depay might have been mentioned a couple of times, thats about it.

Trouble now is that everything is seized on by people and then in turn spoken about as fact.

Maybe we really did get close with Depay. But then again it may have been something that we have done 100s of times over the last 50 years. We just dont know.

However, sporting director Marcel Brands admitted he was surprised by the late move from Manchester, and says it was a 'whirlwind transition'.

'If you had asked me two days ago where Memphis was going to go I would have said PSG,' he told omroepbrabant.nl. 'The British were very late with a concrete offer.

"Actually, there is only in the last 48 hours there is a transfer to Manchester United. It has become a whirlwind transition. But ultimately the player decides where he wants to go. And that's become Manchester.'
