I loved it when the two sets of fans sang "Merseyside" together (at the '86 Cup Final?). I was pleased for them when they won the Cup Winners' Cup but I was mad with jealousy when they played United in the Cup Final in '85 where a win would have given them the double. I ended up going to William Brown library for the afternoon as I couldn't stand watching hoping United would win. So I can understand to an extent the gathering jealousy leading to hostility from the bitters.

The Derby - Where's the hatred come from?

I Havnt been to a Goodison Derby for many years, but the atmosphere has definately changed.
I think its about the delusional attitude of the bitters, they blame us for getting them kicked out of europe, they actually believe that had hysel and the subsequent ban not happened that they would have ruled Europe for the next 25 years
this little joke just about sums up their attitude:
Q How many Evertonians does it take to change a lightbulb?
A None..........they just sit in the dark and blame it all on Liverpool
Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"
Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"
Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"

I think it got 'friendly'-ish in the 80's when both teams were succesful; but I can recall thinking in the '70's that it was the older fans who were really bitter - some auld fellas on the Kop would shout themselves hoarse calling them every name under the sun - even when we weren't playing them! THAT probably goes back to the sectarian divisions that were much stronger in Liverpool in the 30's and 40's, and which were broadly reflected in the clubs support.
The recent bitterness - and I'm convinced it has recently got significantly worse - seems to me to stem from the myth of a Blue dominated Europe being denied by Heysel reaching the age of a Generation; 20 years ago, no-one would have given it any credence, (as has been pointed out, they didn't even win the League or Cup in 1986, never mind the European Cup), but now the Blues have managed, by repeating it, to turn it into an Article of Faith - especially for the younger, more-ignorant ones, but also for the older ones who should know better.
BTW - there are - for me - too many nasty stories emerging of semi-organised, racist, violent, crudely offensive and obnoxious elements, esp at Away games; other sites have have shown a surprising number with a willingness to codone them (They're 'True Reds' apparently). Whatever it takes - re-education, serious talkings to, shopping them or good, old-fashioned beating the sh*t out of them - we should all strive to stamp this out. Their behaviour refelcts on all of us.

The other night Shaggy they were arguing with me that Carsley is going to be the difference and (this was honestly "discussed") Apparently he's better than any one of Gerrard, Xabi or "That donkey Sissoko".
