oh yeah, i forgot about all the dutch talent that he has to choose from!!. i'm not blameing kuyt for yesterdays game as there were lots of bad performances but kuyt has no eye for goal and no pace, end of.

he works hard granted BUT without pace and a great eye for goal you can not live in the top 4 of any top league. sorry mate but your delluded if you think kuyt iis the answer to are partnership with torres.

we all get frustrated after a game like yesterday's, but some, as i posted earlier, like to single out a scapegoat - and Dirk is it on here at least. It's nothing new, and I include match going Reds in that, but it doesn't make it right.

Who thinks (seriously) that they personally would do a better job than Kuyt? I bet there's an awful lot and most are probably correct and that should be the end of this thread. Kuyt doesn't score goals because he's played deep - almost if this is the right phrase - as a defensive forward/advanced midfielder. He's underrated by people on here, we miss his committment when he's not in the team. Personally I think he's the best partner for torres.

But Tom even when he is in the box he is not clinical in front of goal.....should have won the citeh game for us with that header

i see your point mate about him playing deep but if that was the reason then why does gerrard score quite a few from eve further back? kuyt is a very good hardworking forward but IMO he would not get in to any title winning team, he is just not world class IMO.

The thing is Kuyt has never been a STRIKER in the first place. He didn't play in that position at Feyenoord; he used to play as central attacking midfielder, and sometimes on the wings as well. He does what he has to do.. he fights for the ball, creates chances, keeps the defenders busy.

Exactly what I was gonna say - he doesn't exactly look lethal whenever a chance falls his way, so saying it's merely his 'role' doesn't wash with me. I don't think there's any doubt we should be able to find someone who can be a good partner for Torres AND provide some kind of goal threat themselves, it really can't be too much to ask can it?!

I've just watched yesterdays game again and Kuyt found himself in good positions and had a number of decent efforts on goal only to be blocked ala nearly every one of ours yesterday.
Also he laid on decent passes in quite a few of our moves watch again and you'll see.

Yet he still managed to squander possession more times than keep it.

You know I'd accept a player in that position with his strike rate, if he had the vision and skill to effect the game, but he doesn't.

Take Rooney for example, or until last weekend Berbatov, similar strike rates to Kuyt, but if you watch them play the gulf in quality is vast.

Watch him play very closely, the amount of times the ball comes to him, and he stifles the momentum of an attack, either loses the ball cheaply/fails to control it, or plays the simple ball back which is not a threat whatsoever to the opposition is just unacceptable.

And I'll say it again; I really am getting fed up with this "he works hard" excuse. I reckon seeing mostly ****e or underachieving forwards has rotted peoples brains in recent years, because that's what we've gotten mostly. Thankfully there have been exceptions, Fowler, Owen and now Torres, but those who remember the kind of football we used to play when Kenny was in his pomp and when Beardsley took over for him - two players who play the role Kuyt does now - know that's the standard required.
