Rafa on Kewell and Blackburn.
(not sure if its been posted brfore so apologies if so)
November 02, 2007
LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez says Harry Kewell can still earn himself a new contract at Anfield.
The Socceroos winger has had a torrid time since moving to Anfield from Leeds in 2003, with injuries wrecking his spell with the Reds.
“He can win himself a new contract by working hard and playing well consistently. No one has any doubt about the quality of Harry,” Benitez said.
“He's a fantastic player. I see him as a very good player with options for being here.
“He knows how important this time is. I'm not thinking about which kind of contract we might be talking about. I am thinking about him being fit and seeing him play well.
“I don't have any doubt about his quality. I just want to see him on the pitch, playing well and scoring goals and we will decide.”
The fact that Benitez has used Kewell, despite concerns over his fitness, in both of Liverpool's recent Champions League finals, shows the level of the Spaniard's respect for the 29-year-old's ability.
But continued concerns over the long-term conditioning of Kewell have left the winger's future unclear, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The midfielder returned from a thigh problem in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Cardiff in midweek and Benitez has not ruled out offering him a new deal.
Benitez, whose team have won just twice in their last six Premiership matches, meets Blackburn at Ewood Park tonight, where Rovers will be looking for an eighth straight win.
The Spaniard has revealed that stopping Rovers' strike-force of South African star Benni McCarthy and Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz will be key to picking up a positive result.
He added: “It's more difficult to play against them because Blackburn are not only a very physical team but they are also playing well.
“Mark Hughes is doing a very good job and the understanding between the players and the strikers is very good. They are playing nice, good football and winning games.”
Hughes believes the victories against Liverpool and then in the following game against Manchester United, could fill the already buoyant Rovers camp with a genuine belief that they can break the stranglehold of the top four and play Champions League football next season.
But he insists Blackburn are already receiving more recognition for their impressive start to the campaign.
Hughes said: “If we go into the games and we lose the games it's not going to be doom and gloom because we're coming up against some of the best sides in the country.
“But for our own benefit and our own confidence as a group, it would be really important if we can get some positive results from these two games.
“We keep talking about making a statement and in some games in previous seasons we lacked a little bit of belief in understanding how good a player and how good a group we actually are.
“That's the difference this year. There's real belief and confidence in each other and in their own individual play.
“This year there's probably a sense that more people are paying attention to what we're doing rather than us being an afterthought. That's something we're going to have to deal with because we probably haven't had that before.”

Rafa comes across as someone who (outside making the odd decision) takes no bollocks off anyone whatsoever.
Kewell must be working his knackers off to get back to fitness otherwise he knows he'll be out on loan and off to a small club - like Everton.
Harry is a massive Reds supporter and wants to be where is MUCH more than some.

Agree. I assume it is a joke, just a poor one. If it is a rumour that hasnt started on this thread it should be confirmed, IMO.Originally posted by Morphorino View Postcurious, i've not heard this one, unless it's meant to be a joke, whats the rumour?

Smacks of bull**** to me. He would have been under the directions of our medical team doing exactly as they told him.Originally posted by Iceman View PostYou may be well be right, but someone who used to train at melwood with him told me that Harry was "never ready to resume full training" and preferred to fullfill his contract by jogging round the training ground
it just smacks of a bad money grabbing attitude to me
I wouldn't rush Harry back at all, reserve games and training till at least feb if I was in charge, actually get him back properly once and for all."that is my opinion and that is more important than what anyone else has to say about it" - Mr A.Fergusson, Oct 2011

He could be a dangerous sub for a month or two. I see where you are coming from but if he is fit and I suspect he has been rested plenty, he has to play even as a sub. If we are going to offer him a contract he has to show he can honour it.Originally posted by BillobShaisley View PostSmacks of bull**** to me. Harry should take a massive pay cut and have a contract built around incentives, or pay as you play if he wants a new contract. I am a big fan of Kewell and he is undoubtedly better than most of our other wing options, I just think a statement is required to show his heart is still in it. If not he will join somewhere that will pay good wages, Fulham etc
