Thanjk you.

You know it amazes me the differences in opinion fans can have on a players worth. I accept that pennant has a few tricks and has occasionally had a good game. But there has been more games than enough were he has been woeful. Take the champions league final. Loads of fans praised him to the hilt. Pennant himself has been boasting how good he was! I thought he was his usual ultimately ineffective self.
I asked a colleague in work, a fellow red, who his pick of the season was. He said kuyt. In the name of good god the lad is a tryer but his overall contribution has been pure sh*te. I asked him had he actually seen any games.
Football is funny like that.
It is indeed.
Some people let other factors cloud their judgement. In fact we ALL do to a certain extent. Some try (subconciously) to block out some things and focus in on what they like to see.
EG: Someone who is desperate for Kuyt to succeed because he was calling for him to be signed will take an awful lot longer to realise he's not up to it.
I admit that I wasn't one who wanted Pennant to be signed but over the back end of last season and the start of this, he impressed me. Now, I don't think he is a great player but the point of this thread is who has been our best players. IMO, most have been bad therefore leaving room for pennant as one of the better ones.
''In fact, our 'dip' in form coincided with Pennant's absense.''
If you consider a back to back 4-0 and 6-0 win a 'dip' in form, then I'd love to know what you'd consider a good result.
For me, things went wrong form the Portsmouth game onwards.
What? HE left out these results, not me. That's what I was on about. Pennant was in the team and playing at his best against Derby and this is my point. He was MOTM thatday for me.
Like you say, it was after these, we started playing ****e. I'd go up to the Marseille game. that's when it went bad for me.

Nic - you stated "In fact, our 'dip' in form coincided with Pennant's absense [sic]"
Red Reet took the Pompey match to be the start of our poor run (which I agree with, but however) and pointed out that Pennant played in all of those games...thus proving your assessment incorrect.
He was replying to your assertion - i.e. the Derby match doesn't come into it.
Just when I discovered the meaning of life, they changed it
NO. Take out his last couple of games before his injury and he was fantastic this season. Some people's memories aren't very good.
He was one of our best in the second half of last season and continued the form into this. He looked a constant threat to any defense he played against.
Most of the others have been underperforming so I can't see any that have played better than Pennant bar Reina.
EDIT: Arbeloa has been good. Benayoun has been fantastic but hasn't played enough.
pennant has been missed there is no doubt, as he is an outlet on the right.
BUT the fact is ,,,,,he is still way short of liverpool fc standard. How you cna be happy with a non goalscroing non threat of a winger i have no idea.
HK has probably had more shots on goal this season. Enough said
How many defenses has he ripped apart this season? How many chances created were instigated by him? How many fantastic balls has he delievered into the box only for one of our underperforming forwards to boot over the bar?
Point being, assist don't tell the whole story. You can blame the forwards for that.
He played really well in the early part of the season and that is a fact.

Eh?
I left out those results because that wasn't a 'dip' in form, we were still playing well. Your point was that was our dip coincided after he got injured, when in fact we only won 2 of the last 7 matches before he got injured, and he didn't play in one.
I don't mind Pennant and think he had a decent START, but the stats tell a different story to what you think.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

The point I was trying to make was that Pennant was in the team when we were on fire earlier in the season.

Correct.
My smilies don't work in work, but you can just pretend that this percentage sign is a handshake... %

You're all forgetting the point of this thread.
Who said I was happy with a "non scoring blah blah blah"?
I think he has been one of our better performers this season and that is all! FFS!!
