On the premise of playing well until injury then surely Xabi has to get a mention. Although he was getting abuse in certain threads at the time because we don’t see the 90 yard passes anymore, there were still a few who could still recognise what he did for the team. Unfortunately it took an injury before many others could appreciate what he offers on the pitch besides long range passes and shots.
Alonso is one of the best midfielders in the planet.
while there's no doubt that he's been massively missed since his injury, there can also be also no doubt that he's form has been far from consistent, let alone impressive.
An inconsistant, un in form Xabi is still one of the best midfielders in the premiership IMO.

Well at the start of the season, I had time to watch most matches 2 or 3 times, because I’d usually be drunk first time. It isn’t until you watch a match in great detail that you appreciate the simple things. Xabi let very few people past him in midfield but because he rarely does outrageous last ditch tackles like Momo or Mascherano, they mainly go unnoticed. Practically every move starts through him, but because he plays simple passes to his team-mates now rather than long balls over the top, again they mainly go unnoticed. If you watched match of the day, you wouldn’t even notice he was on most games, which unfortunately is what most base opinions on.
Xabi was poor last season, but this year he was playing his role perfectly before injury. Whenever he comes back and people notice the team improving, they might then notice exactly what he contributes.
Oh and this isn't an absence makes the heart grow fonder post, I wrote a similar one earlier in the season when he was fit.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
I have recently been advocating Alonso as our most important player and he is almost. Reina is our most important player and an injury to him would see us drop a couple of levels, imo.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24
On the Pennant debate....he has started 10 games. We have won 4 of them drawn 5 and lost 1. He is our only player to be sent off and has 1 assist (Wigan to Yossi). Decidedly average to be honest. Much like the rest of the squad.
