They did more for the club than those two, McAteer especially.

No arguments there, and McAteer was seldom played in centre midfield which is where he excelled for Ireland, but they never looked half the players for us that they did in that World Cup.

Not trying to be a smartass here, but he´s actually done quite well the last couple of years. Plays midfield nowadays and is actually in the finnish national team.

PS. The club is Djurgården or Djurgårdens IF. A bit like calling LFC for Liverpools DS

Yeah, If I recall correctly he played some part (mostly as a sub) in a couple of qualifiers last year. Think he scored aswell. Decent little player, obviously not good enough for LFC, but still good.

We´ll see if he´ll keep his place in the national team with Stuart Baxter replacing Roy Hodgson just recently.

I always thought McAteer did okay for us considering he was played out of position as a wing back/full back for most of his LFC career. He was always the most committed player on the pitch and he was no world beater but he was decent.

McAteer did win most of his caps for Ireland on the right of midfield, including in that World Cup where he alternated with Razor Houghton on the right flank inh a 4-5-1 formation. He used to play CM for Bolton though.

I remember the World Cup just before we bought him. Babb and McAteer looked fantastic for Ireland, Babb looked like the new Alan Hansen, McAteer dominated games. When we bought them both I was very happy indeed.
I suppose they are early forerunners of Diao and Diouf.

I dont know about that, he played well against Italy when he came on for the last 15 mins and ran Maldini ragged, including one deadly nutmeg, other than a good cross for Aldo to score against Mexico that was all he did. A really old Ray Houghton was in the team ahead of him.

What about that highly rated Irish kid, Michael Foley-Sheridan? Think he went home to play in the Irish league? Anyone know? I saw him for the reserves once and he wasn't very good. My MOM that night was Darren Potter.

Ramon Calliste! Went to Scunthorpe, got injured, released and no idea what happened to him since.

Oh they're flooding back now....some of the more recent cast-offs...

Zak Whitbread is still at Millwall. My old man scouted him last season. He's a ST holder at Chesterfield, and Millwall played them last season. I told him to look out for the lad who "looks like Sami Hyypia from a distance". The Lions lost 5-1 and Whitbread was "all at sea".

David Raven is still at Carlisle and, I think, captain.

Just read this in an old thread on TLW courtesy of Google.

I remember Mark Smyth.......this is very true.

It's sad how things happen so suddenly for people isn't it, was on the Vauxhall Motors web site and it said Smyth scores in reserve action. Mark Smyth went from playing in the 1st team last season (all be it on one occasion), training at melwood with the finest, playing in the reserves with quality players (1st teamers coming back from injury) to playing for Vauxhall Motors reserves in the West Cheshire League which my brother plays in, its so strange and i feel well sorry for him. (No disrespect to Vauxhall Motors reserves but you can understand what i am saying)!!!

Just found this on Daniele Padelli.

‘Padelli made his Liverpool bow in the final home game of the season, against Charlton. It was a catastrophic display and he was sent back to Sampdoria by manager Rafa Benitez soon afterwards.

Padelli made one appearance in pre-season for Sampdoria, a performance so disastrous that it made his Liverpool debut seem like a walk in the park. In a friendly against Crotone, Padelli received a tame backpass from team mate Attillio Fibba, trod on the ball, fell over and the ball squirmed into the back of the net.

Two minutes later, Padelli came to claim a corner and inexplicably headed the ball into his own net.

He he now on loan at Pisa, where he has failed to make a first team appearance and looks set to have his contract terminated after a training ground bust-up with coach Flavio Bullio. After punching a corner into his own net, Bullio pulled Padelli aside to discuss his technique. Padelli, distinctly unimpressed, headbutted Bullio, ran back to the dressing room where he took a sledgehammer out of his bag and smashed the place to pieces before driving home. He is currently being investigated by the Italian Football Association.’

I was bored and chuckling to myself at Padelli's woeful solitary appearance for us, wondering if he'd plummeted into the depths of despair, Partridge-style.

The hints were in the names - 'Fibba' and 'Bullio'. The latter was going to be called 'Bull****tio' but I thought that was a touch obvious.

Anyone remember Tony Cousins? He played in the reserves for years but never broke through to the first team (except maybe in a League Cup game). He has played for various League of Ireland teams since and I think he coaches at one now.

Think you mean John Paul Kelly (Joxer). Same age level as Guthrie I think, but this kid was ten time the player Guthrie was - he was brilliant. Got homesick though.

"Joxer" as he is commonly known as, played at youth level for Lourdes Celtic before moving to the famed Liverpool academy in 2003 under the guidance of Steve Heighway. He made quick progression at Liverpool and before long was a regular in the reserves. Despite this, he got homesick and returned to Dublin where he joined Bohemians.

He made his league debut on April 1 2005 in a 1-0 defeat by Derry City and soon became an integral part of the side. He played mostly on the wing under Gareth Farrelly but has moved into centre midfield under Sean Connor.

"Joxer" has represented Ireland at many underage levels and was voted Under-19 Player of the Year at FAI Awards in 2006.

He captained the Irish Under-21 team in all three of their games in the Madeira tournament in early 2007.

Funnily enough, also playing with Joxer at Bohemians is Harpal Singh who was touted as the first asian to play for the full England team and being a LW was duly tipped to be the answer to all our prayers!!!!

Was supposed to have more potential than Aaron Lennon and James Milner! Wonder what went wrong there?
