Harry Kewell heading for the exit at Liverpool FC

Harry Kewell heading for the exit at Liverpool FC
Mar 13 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

HARRY KEWELL'S Liverpool career appears to be drawing to a close after he told Rafa Benitez he wants to be allowed to travel to a training camp with a young Australia side rather than work on his fitness at Melwood.

Kewell is keen to join up with an Australia squad featuring just four senior players next week while his Liverpool team-mates are preparing for the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League.

Should Benitez relieve Kewell of his Melwood duties it will be the clearest indication yet that the injury-plagued winger has no future at the club.

Kewell was not in the Liverpool squad which travelled to Milan for Tuesday’s Champions League tie and he has not played for the first team since a fleeting substitute appearance against Barnsley last month.

With his current contract due to expire this summer and with no suggestions that he will be offered a new deal, all indications are that he is now heading towards the Anfield exit door.

The Aussie training camp takes place in Singapore and national team coach Pim Verbeek had resigned himself to working with just a group of young players while the majority of his senior stars remained with their respective clubs.

But with a World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming looming on March 26 – just days before the crucial Merseyside derby – Kewell has told Verbeek he wants to take part in the training camp in a bid to build up his fitness and to be ready for international duty.

The decision about whether he is allowed to travel to the Far East now rests with Benitez and should he give Kewell the go-ahead, it will be the clearest signal yet that his five-year stint with the Reds will not be extended.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

cya. thank fook we only paid 5mill for him. his real value at that time should have been closer to 15. what if we'd have paid that. worst signing in history in terms of return. worse even than cisse!

Bit harsh, I wouldn't say he wanted to turn out a failure due to injuries. Rafa aint gonna play him again any how. Well he may just start him in the CL final

He's trying to get fit for the CL final.

He's going to be the only player in history to have played more CL finals than league games

Always the same in what regard? He's hardly featuring for us recently and during his career with us has made few Austarlian caps.

His injuries have wrecked him as a player but his attitude in trying to get back has IMO been good. I think people are too harsh on him.

I agree with dww, i think its shame how his career has progressed with us. Reminds me of Nigel Clough (another number 7), decent player just hasnt gone as well as it could have.

                    Completely agree

When everyone was slating him last summer (& January) and wishing him gone, I was totally behind letting him see out his current deal so he can do his utmost to earn another - that said, he has had a few opportunities which haven't worked out and it looks like he may very well have played his last game for us

His time with us has been a disappointment as we haven't seen the form that his Leeds days had shown, however I don't think he deserves half the criticism he gets on the forums & will wish him well wherever he moves on to

Haha, that would be a brilliant stat. Played 5, two as sub in the league and 3 CL finals

the abuse he gets on here is shameful really.

Why should he sit here not playing a game when he could be helping his country advance to the World Cup?

Some people are ****s really. Nothing he does will ever be good enough for people here.

He is an excellent pro. It's not his fault that he gets injury after injury.

**** off! He has barely played for us in the last 5 years mate. He only ever come out here in the off season to spend time with his family, and when he had those ops last season he was here for a couple of months.

                              get your facts straight.
