I'm not sure about these figures but compared to £11mil Heskey, £14mil Cisse, £11mil Diouf, £6mil? Kirkland, £9mil Hamann then Cheyrou, Diao, Riise, Smicer, Finnan all for around the £5mil mark I think it's fair to say that Houllier was backed more than Evans."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation." - Pepe Reina, Nov '09.

Parry didn't fcuk up the Ronaldo bid though did he.Originally posted by Parm View Postbizarre comments, esp as, if the story is true, that he wanted to buy Essien for 5mill and then loan him back into obscurity in french football.
but then again, maybe he is on about the ronaldo transfer and Parry arseing about over a million quid which cost us his signature?
We'd agreed a £4mill deal for Ronaldo but he wanted £20k a week, which Ged and Thommo felt was excessive considering he was only 18 and also because it'd have a detrimental affect on the other 2 teens we'd just bought at the time in Le Tallec and Pongolloe especially if they found out Ronaldo was on more money than them.
Then the next minute Scum are getting him for £12.6 Mill. They've won the league, bigger stars than Dallas, they've got more silver than Buckhingham Palace, no one knows quite what to expect, when the Red Machine's in full effect!

"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.
"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

Don't remember Evans being refused cash for a player he wanted though. And it was still the 'Liverpool way' to add just one or two players a year to the squad, rather than the annual influx that Houllier (and Benitez) favoured.
Not sure how you'd quantify one being backed more than the other, mind, given that the inflationary transfer fees of the late 90's/early noughties tend to skew the issue.
I think historically, up to the arrival of Abramovich, Liverpool were able to compete in the transfer market with anyone and have never been unwilling to back the manager. In hindsight, this was not always a cause for celebration.

He was mate, continuously and I've heard that from the man himself. Desailly and Sheringham were two that we could have had but were blocked by the board.Originally posted by zimbo View PostDon't remember Evans being refused cash for a player he wanted though. You're right about comparing their backing though, it's not something that could really be done with a great degree of accuracy but I don't think too many of Houllier's potential buys were blocked by the board but that's basically a guess based on how much money he wasted.

The only one I can recall being blocked for Ged was Michael Essien. Obviously in hindsight it was a mistake but the board didn't want to loosen the purse strings again for a man who had splurged over £10M on the central midfield talents of Igor Biscan and Salif Diao. Can't blame them really.A humble guy with healthy desire.

lets be totally honest though..... houllier saying that he wishes that he had the money for someone like that is a load of bollix... also, Ged would never have bought torres anyway because:
1. torres isn't french
2. torres isn't french-african
had ged signed torres, he'd probably be playing left back for us...with Biscan in the centre. Also, Ged would be going on about how he "discovered" torres..... blah blah blah....
the one thing I read about Ged that really made me cringe was after Istanbul, he went into the dressing room to celebrate with the team. It was like he was the manager apparently.... really embarrassing for the guy from what I've heard....
i am not totally bashing him, but you have to admit, Ged really lost the plot towards the end of his tenure here... had he left after he had the banger, then he would be a legend.....

You might well be right on Sheringham, although I seem to recall Desailly choosing to go to Chelsea due to the irresistible allure of 'that London'.
And because they offered him more money.

I was told both deals were blocked at the last minute because the board deemed both players to be too old and we wouldn't get enough seasons at a high level out of them. Good decision.Originally posted by zimbo View PostYou might well be right on Sheringham, although I seem to recall Desailly choosing to go to Chelsea due to the irresistible allure of 'that London'.
