If he played as he should and had us going at opponents with Fowler, Owen and Jari in behind, we'd have won the league, absolutely no doubt in my mind. His useless tactics were the catalyst for the selling of Fowler which was one of the biggest mistakes the club has ever made IMO

He was a nob. This season after the first leg against Arsenal he was rooting for them, then after we beat em was saying they should have gone through. Lost the plot in spectacular style. If Evans had been backed like him, we would have won the title

Didn't Evans get turned down when he wanted Zidane, Lizarazu, Desailly etc?

Yes he was knocked back by the board for all those signings. Typical Moores that backed the wrong horse in ged. Gave FA to evans who was a good manager and gave us some of the best attacking football we have seen. So when Rafa came along moores had allowed Ged and co to spunk all the money away on ****e and at the same time have no scouting system setup and if you belive various reports our scouting system under ged consisted of his brother in law who was a wine seller in france. Out of all of geds buys his best were hyypia, macca and didi.

He completely lost the plot and if thommo would have stayed in charge for the full season when ged was sick i believe we would have won the league that season and got to the final of the champions league. I lost all respect for ged when he subbed didi when we were playing bayern leverkusen as before he went off we were strolling then he takes didi off and poof we were out as they and ballack just overrun the midfield.

He did a lot of good for us in his first few seasons but he also ripped the heart out of the club. I lived in Kirkby for years and knew a few of the youth players in the academy and they use to tell me that houllier never spent anytime there looking at our players or having any input with the staff. Now contrast this to Rafa who has rebuilt our scouting department and also single handedly turned the youth and reserve teams into FA cup winners and champions in 4 years. Bet you even wenger has not done that. This is the stuff that a lot of fans do not see with regards to rafa and need to remember that rafa with help from a few others has single handedly rebuilt this club and its reputation in the world since his arrival.

How many of the players we were linked with under ged turn round and say the manager was the reason they joined? Rafa is regarded as one of the best managers in world football today and people need to remember that.

Agree with EVERYTHING in there. Especcialt the bits about Thommo staying on for the full season and the Leverkusen game.
I thought at the time (when houllier was sick and Thommo was in charge) we are really gonna win this ****ing thing. Then Houllier came back - Too soon imo - and BOOM!!!! low and behold, he ****ed it up.
Same with that Leverkusen game. We were winning and were all over the germans. Didi was a ****in star that night and what does old Ged do? Takes off our best player and hands Leverkusen the result that took them into the semis and then the final.
For me, that was the start of Houliers downfall. He lost the plot that year and instead of building the squad with genuine quality like Duff, Anelka and Jari he bought 3 of the biggest piles of dog **** to have ever played for our club.
WAY TO GO GED. IF ONLY YOU HAD BEEN BACKED IN THE TRANSFER MARKET WE WOULD HAVE .................................................. ...........
              .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ........

Ged's ego let him down sometimes. Wenger turned Toure into a fine CB and Henry into a great striker and was rightly applauded for both. Next thing Ged is trying to turn Igor into a CB.

Some of the rewriting of history on this thread is appalling.

1:Moores etc never backed Evans with money.
Yes they did. He spent a shed load. And talk of winning the leageu under Roy is nonsense. How many decent defenders did he buy? he could not spot a half decent keeper a mile away. Our defence was a shambles. Also remember the chronic lack of discipline and the spice boys. We were a joke!

2:Houlliers scouting was his brother in law who ran a wine company.
                      Utter drivel.

3:Apparently didn't play Jari cos he gave Heskey some advice in training
Bollox. Any evidence of this? No. He didn't play Jari because by the time we got him he was over the hill. He was never the quickest but when he signed for us he looked like he was running in treacle. He was simply not suited to the English League. Physically he could not hack it. Top notch player and the feet of an angel, but he he had the athleticism of my grandad.

4:Yet he comes out with **** like 'Fowler pretending to eat grass'
What was he supposed to say? Fowler was mocking Everton fans by pretending to snort a white line? He had to publicly defend his player. That's what all the good managers do. You should ask why Fowler was acting like such a tool?

5:if babbel had have been given a chance he would have been just as good as before
Sorry but no. He had lost it physically. And remember to show support Ged had given him a new contract when he was ill. Unfortunately Babbel was brilliant before the illness but was never the same again. He was shot. Look at his career since leaving us.

6:His useless tactics were the catalyst for the selling of Fowler which was one of the biggest mistakes the club has ever made IMO
Nonsense. He sold Fowler because he was a fat, lazy, drunken pratt who pissed away his talent. The fact we got 11m+ for him was a miracle. Everyone could see he was on the slide. And what did he do after he left us? Exactly. Fowler was a superb young striker who left fame etc go to his head, and his beer gut unfortunately.

7:knew a few of the youth players in the academy and they use to tell me that houllier never spent anytime there looking at our players
Again drivel. Look at some of the youth players he brought on. Who was it that visited the youth set up so often he repeated watched a young Steven Gerrard and accelerated his development to the first team?

8:How many of the players we were linked with under ged turn round and say the manager was the reason they joined
Actually lots of them. Including all the better signings (Babbel, Hamman, Hyppia etc)

9:We should have signed quality like Duff, Anelka and Jari
We did sign Jari. He could not cut it in the English League. Yeah and look how much Anelka has achieved since we refused to sign him. Oh yes a world beater. So bad even Chelsea are looking to get rid after half a season. He looked good for poor teams like City and Bolton. Nuff said. Duff....if we had paid 10m+ for that crock you would have been up in arms. Great player. But a body made of glass.

10:Next thing Ged is trying to turn Igor into a CB.
Oh dear. Pay attention. When we bought Igor all the top teams in Europe were after him. And he had two specialist positions...CB and DM. So he was not trying to turn him into anything.

Still, set up Luis for "that" goal against Juve - apart from that can't even remember the lad playing.

Pongo could have done more, but hardly got a game - even with Owen injured.

Already been discussed on est1892 many months ago how it was a misplaced pass anyway. And if you watch it, it is a misplaced pass!

I think the problem with our goalkeepers wasn't due to the manager but more to do with the goalkeeping coach (Joe Corrigan) Evans has James and Friedel as his two main keepers during his time as manager both were highly rated, and have since proved to be quality, other promising keepers suffered under Houllier when Corrigan was also keepers coach

I think that's on Fowler, admittedly he was never the same after his injury in the derby in 97, but in the treble winning season despite being 3rd choice striker he scored ~20 goals in all competitions, his record at Leeds was a goal every other game.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
