I don't understand Benitez, Capello and the like

England always seem to scrape wins, Liverpool often play well but on too many occasions (like against Sunderland) we scrape through against utter ****e teams by playing at their level and style.

I don't understand pragmatic and defensive managers doing so with good players. I'd understand Rafa doing it in 2004 but not today. I don't understand Capello doing it with England or Real Madrid.

Football is all about winning and there are loads of ways of doing so, often you will meet teams better so "tactics" have to come into play but any manager who plays cautiously or sets up to "not lose" first when he has better players than the opposition is totally out of order.

Rashid, I agree with what you say at times but I think you're on the verge of getting banned here too

This doesnt happen often but I actually think Rashid has a point. I was thinking that there are very clear similarities between england and liverpool whilst watching the match.

I understand that tactics are very important but even i think that sometimes you just need to say "go kick their asses". Its a fine line and very early days in Cappello's set up. Id say both he and Rafa will get it right but probably both could do with going for a win a bit more aggresively.

Rafa does it away in Europe to his credit or maybe he just plays his normal game and it's perfect for Europe. I agree teams need tactics, but if you have better players you should have confidence to go and get at them a little bit.

I think you're right in that not losing is important to them, but in doing so you gain control of the game whether on the ball or off it which is important in the modern game. Problem is I don't think our players are good enough on the ball to play the high-tempo passing game we're ultimately aiming for and that is our undoing a lot of the time

‘Been thinking about this too. We (Liverpool) have the ideal side to play attacking football but Rafa is too rigid in his tactics. For example, if Rafa was to set up a team like:

                    Reina

                    Carragher Agger Skrtel Dossena

                    Mascherano Alonso

                    Gerrard Keane Babel (or Kuyt)

                    Torres

And then told Mascherano and Xabi to sit in front of the back four, and Gerrard, Keane, Babel and Torres to interchange, run into spaces etc Agger, Mascherano and Alonso are all capable of hitting quality short and long passes, are comfortable on the ball and can ‘play football’. A back six of Reina, Carr Agger {can you see what it is yet?), Skrtel, Dossena and Mascherano are bullet proof. The front four have pace, ability and intelligence to cause mayhem.

But, there again, what the **** do I know?
                    Another MASSIVE game

The reason why you don`t understand Benitez, Capello and the like is because they know 1000 times more about football than you, they have won Champions league titles and more and your just some dude that posts on an INTERNET site who thinks he knows better than these exceptional men.

so he experimented in a friendly and learned something.

As usual England play poorly in a friendly and get blasted for it. Despite all the talk of times changing and progress taking time, the media and many fans do the usual thing of booing when we don't win. Even in a friendly.

If Capello can't experiment in a friendly, then when can he?

Too fecking right matey - these guys play a few seasons on Champ Manager & think they know better than some of the best managers in the world

It was a fecking meaningless friendly - these guys have forgotten more about managing a top level side than we'll ever know..

I don't really see his starting line up as experimenting. It was the same old players, some played out of position i.e. Gerrard. Why can't an England manager have the balls to pick players on merit not on reputation. Young and Agbonlahor should have been in the squad at the very least. And Joe Cole should be one of the first names on the team sheet. And Lampard one of the last. The Fat prick.
