Hyypia is a legend but with Carra, Skrtle and Agger all fit and available Sami was always going to be 4th choice and he knows that. Considering the rules we have to work by i would say it was an fair decision. Those of you who are critical are only being critical due to sentimental reasons not because you honestly believe that at 34 he is going to get a game in the CL ahead of our main defenders.

Sentiment has its place and Sami is a well paid, well treated professional. The correct footballing decision was made and thats down to strong management.

i'd say it was down to common sense more than strong management. agger, skrtel and carra are our best defenders and as much as i love / admire / respect sami, he must have known in his heart that he would have to settle for carling cup / fa cup and games against the so called smaller teams this year.
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

        ok mate
Where does it say he had to read about it? From what I have seen the club told him just after the transfer window. He was very grateful for another contract and said he was happy to play when he was needed.
This is the biggest cup going, no time for sentiment and Rafa had to do what was best for the team and not Sami. He has been a great servant to the club and will hopefully get a right few run outs in other cups and the league.

regardless of the reasoning for leaving the big man out, he should've been made aware, its just the right thing to do, the decent thing.

FFS he's a ****ing legend. Its wrong plain and simple (not telling him that is).

Disgraceful treatment by Rafa IF true.

To be totally honest, I'm actually quite embarrassed by this.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

He was told by the club!! His problem is if he had of known he might not get selected to play in Europe then he might have left the club. He cant come out and say one week he is happy to play when needed then go running to the press when he isnt selected.

"The club has timed it perfectly. They diden't wan't me to move to another club, so they choose to bring me the news just as the transfer window shut.

They've played him here, he said he was shocked and found out after the transfer window. If Rafa had given him an indication that he would not be playing in the CL why would it suddenly be a shock now? Rafa should have told him straight, he DESERVES that much.

Where has he said he was shocked, why make it sound worse than it is?

I am sure he was warned when he signed his new contract he was 4th choice. This is what he said before he signed a new contract, what is so different now? He was the one wanting to stay at the club and wanted the new contract.

(This is the last thing I am going to say on this as just going round in circles, I can understand him being upset as I am sure he wants to play every game)

“It’s not so common for a foreign player in this country to spend ten years at one club, so I am delighted to stay with this great club.

“We will see what next year brings. I will keep working hard and keep myself fit and whenever the manager needs me I will be there.”

"It would be very nice to get to 10 years at the club but I'm just concentrating on playing well."

"Whether I stay wouldn't depend on how many games I play. I'm not like that. I'm not interested in someone promising me anything," he added.

"If we have four centre-backs, then everyone fights for their place and performances should determine who plays.

"If I keep playing well then it'll be very difficult for the manager to change things."

We're supposed to be better than this IMO.

                          From Setanta

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has lambasted the Uefa ruling which he says forced him to leave Sami Hyypia out of his squad for the Champions League.

The Spaniard has had to abide by the new statute which dictates that eight ‘homegrown’ players must be part of the 25-man squad submitted for European competition.

Hyypia was sacrificed by Benitez and The Reds boss could not hide his contempt for the new rule, calling it a “mistake” and questioning its validity.

"Clearly I think it (the new Uefa rule) is a mistake," Benitez told Liverpool's official website.

"When you play in the Champions League, you need the best players you have on the pitch. It is not about where you are from, it is about the best players.

"I would understand if this rule came in for The Premier League, but not for the Champions League."

Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are Benitez’s centre back options for this season’s competition, and he says leaving 34-year-old Hyypia out was a wrench given his vast experience.

"It was a really difficult decision, but we had to do it. With the rule saying that you need more or less eight British - or local - players in the squads, we needed to decide which three centre backs to have for the Champions League," Benitez added.

"We now have four centre backs who are good enough so they have to compete.

"And obviously it depends on the number of games we play and how we progress in the cup competitions too, so there could be a lot of games for many of our players."

Now watch the morbid ****ers come in and dissect and twist Rafa's words...

The issue as far as I am aware isn't that he was left out, it's that he was told the day after the transfer deadline had passed that he would not be included.

To be fair, how many premiership games is he going to get now? Not many I'd guess

He could have moved to Stoke and kept on playing. Deserved to be treated with a bit of honesty and respect

                              But like the man himself says;

so it shouldn't matter, should it?

Sigh, we talk about honesty and respect for a servant of our club...just like Riise got i suppose, but people were less quick to jump on Rafa's back about that as JAR was seen as a villain at the time, never mind the years of great service he gave before hand.

Is this a thread about Rafa Benitez? Riise was sold and he knew he was for sale. Hyypia on the other hand is almost at the end of his career and if rumours are to be believed could have had a move to Stoke to play regularly in probably what is his last season

I doubt Rafa is just to blame on this. Could be Parry too. The treatment of Riise is totally different
