    Reds agree Aquilani deal

Liverpool FC today confirmed they have agreed a deal with AS Roma for the transfer of Italian international Alberto Aquilani, subject to a medical.
Liverpool concluded their discussions with Roma once the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid was finally agreed.

Aquilani, who recently celebrated his 25th birthday, is expected to feature heavily for Italy in next year’s World Cup finals.

Rafa Benitez said: "Alberto is a very good player and I'm delighted we've reached agreement with Roma for his transfer. He will travel to Merseyside later this week for a medical. Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A and the Champions League.

"He has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side."

Just read that he only signed a new contract with AS Roma in May this year. Strange that things could happen very quickly.

It's amazing how Torres was our transfer record for £20m - and it took a player of his calibre before we shelled out that kind of fee. And now we're doing it again on a player like Aquilani, who may well be very good, but isnt a striker (who are always more expensive) or an established world class player.

Then again, i suppose Torres wasnt either.

well hopefully all goes well with his medical and he proves to be a success - good luck to the lad.

Now if we can add say dystin, this defour lad, and another striker/attacker i will be more than over losing alonso

If we get Aquilani, i dont think there's a need to get Defour.

I still dream of Villa, but back to reality, perhaps just Silva will do.

aye but the market has changed dramatically in two years! ffs everton look like getting £20m for lescott - when we signed torres it was a bit of a gamble and i remember being nervy about the price - but at the time there was only chelsea with silly money and united usually added one expensive player every now and then - this year well madrid and city have just completley moved the goal posts and ****ed it up for everyone

I'm going to take a wild guess that a/ the fee will be undisclosed and b/ everyone will none the less have an opinion on what it was and whether we should have spent that much on him.

Yep, we definitely need back-up for Torres, can't see Voronin making any impact. I hope he proves me wrong.

i'd hope so - my only concern is any injury issues and i am being a bit greedy - yeah right now i'd be happy to sign silva and distin and be done with it. but no danger signing any other players that may be available if the quailty is there.
