Any comparison between Lucas and Ronnie Whelan is laughable, absolutely laughable. Whelan was a far more spectacular player who was also technically far far superior and made significant contributions during our most successful years. Get a grip people, Lucas is not going to win us the league, and that is all that matters to me.

I’m not making a direct comparison – obviously Lucas isn’t fit to be mentioned in the same breath – but their styles are not a million miles apart. Solid and unspectacular. Also how old was Whelan when he got into the side? Lucas will improve – sorry, he is improving and will continue to do so.Originally posted by red g View Postsorry mate thats an insult to ronnie to compare him with Lucas......Ronnie weighed in with plenty of goals and was also a decent captain hell of a player and Lucas so far is not fit to be discussed in the same conversation
Obviously with everyone fit he starts on the bench – that is clear. But he’s had a good season so far and is going in the right direction. He’s certainly had a better season than Mascherano. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just doing it wrong. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Mascher, Alonso are the type of players we need in our team to win us the league. You really need me to explain that?Originally posted by Shaggy View Post

Mascherano alone won't "win us the league". Alonso never won us the league. What's your point?

our midfield was atrocious last night. lucas and fabio are not any teams 1st choice pairing. aurelio a left back so he at least has an excuse. as much as i want to see ste and torres play together up top i would like to see him drop deeper and partner ( when fit ) aquilani against the weker teams and play a bit more offensively. the lucas / mash and i suspect lucas / aquilani partnerships do not work. but as for last night i cant understand not starting ste in midfield with lucas or even spearing / plessis. players who know the role and understand how to position themselves.People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

think he was 21 when he scored that double against spurs in the cup final and playing regularly 22 topsOriginally posted by Shaggy View PostI’m not making a direct comparison – obviously Lucas isn’t fit to be mentioned in the same breath – but their styles are not a million miles apart. You didn't say that. You said "Lucas won't win us the league".Originally posted by Tee View PostMascher, Alonso are the type of players we need in our team to win us the league. You really need me to explain that?
We need people Lucas in our squad. It's a squad game, and he's in it.
When Aquilani's fit, I suspect we'll see Lucas back on the bench. However Lucas ain't the ****ing problem this season and people ought to get off his case. He's been better than Mascherano. Simple as that. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Agreed that Lucas is a decent enough squad player."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

Erm, just because Shaggy mentioned 2 players in his post doesn't mean he is stating that LUCAS IS AS GOOD AS RONNIE WHELAN, he's merely pointing out the similarities in their style of play. Pretty straightforward to me
What is also clear, is that all the people bemoaning Lucas' ability in this thread are at the same time justifying his role in the team. Ie, as back up
We haven't just spent £16m on a central midfielder to have him as back up to a £6m 22yr old
EDIT: Err, that read like I'm Shaggy's mum, it wasn't meant to!
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

I can't believe you are part of an intenet hate campaign against Mascherano. He 'll come good and he doesn't need keyboard warriors like you damaging his confidenceOriginally posted by Shaggy View PostYou didn't say that. You said "Lucas won't win us the league".

No I genuinely don’t understand that sort of comment. It’s like saying “John O’Shea won’t win you the league” or “Darren Fletcher won’t win you the league” or “John Obi Mikel won’t win you the league”. They are important, functional squad players and the fact is they all have winners’ medals. There’s no reason why Lucas cannot be part of a title-winning squad, none whatsoever.Originally posted by Tee View PostOh come on now, you know what I meant. Mascherano obviously doesn't have anything to prove - he's the best around at what he does - but he's obviously distracted and it annoys me slightly
that he seems to get off the hook all the time while everyone piles into the easy target, Lucas.

Not doubting that, just don't see him as an integral member of the starting XI, which he has been this season. I have not really criticised him too much before because I know he is filling for Aquilani.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostNo I genuinely don’t understand that sort of comment. Just some people have gone overboard in their defence of the player, and IMO he just is not that good."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley
