We're slowly coming back to our best

I was quite impressed with our performance today, especially how well our defence dealt with Kevin Davies and our passing in the second half. As soon as we scored that second goal, you could see the confidence flowing back and we started to knock the ball about quite impressively.

Gerrard is surely and slowly coming back to his best, together with Mascherano who I feel was superb today; his passing was particularly flawless and he was driving the midfield at the start of the second half. Gerrard was very focused today, long may this continue. He's got to show more of it when the chips are down though, not just when things are going well for us.

But the foundations for this improvement is down to the fact that we are looking very good defensively again, minus one or two errors from which we might have conceded today, but it is clear that it's giving the whole team a lift, as the players are more confident in going forward. Kyriagos is hugely impressive, especially in the air. He hasn't put a foot wrong since he's been drafted in the defence. Special mention has to go to Skrtel as well, who is starting to look like his old self. He's actually a pretty tidy defender in his passing when he looks assured and confident.

Insua is a player who has been on the wrong end of some unfair criticism this year but he's a really good prospect who looks impressive going forward and with the presence of Riera ahead of him, he looks much more assured, especially defensively. He'll only become better with more and more games.

All in all I think it won't be long before we're back to our best, taking into consideration that Torres and Benayoun are due back soon and that Gerrard is still feeling his way back to full sharpness. With more confidence our away form will improve and hopefully we can look forward to more positive football away from home.

I'm feeling optimistic we can look ahead to a strong end of season from our part. We've managed this each year under Rafa's tenure. Slowly and surely Rafa is managing to turn things around, much to the disappointment of people who does not believe in him. Long may this continue.

Walking away from the match I listened to John Aldridge and he was I thought overly negative. That was followed by many negative morons on the phone-ins.

I agree completely and glad to hear a positive perspective.

If that's anywhere near our best, then i'm worried. Luckily it's not

In the circumstances, we've done pretty well today but we're still a way off our best, which was displayed last season in the batterings of Madrid, Manchester and Midlanders.

Agree with you about the defending, it was solid against potentially difficult opponents. Also agree about the confidence after the 2nd goal.

Gerrard was better, more authoritative going forward and i agree about Insua too, he was very good.

If you really believe that any Liverpool fan is 'disappointed' at the prospect of Rafa turning things around, then you havent a clue about football fans.

I'd exercise a bit of caution before i reach for the party poppers though, as Spurs & Villa aside, we havent beaten anyone of any note during these last 6 games. We've won games which we SHOULD be winning (and failed to win one or two that we should be winning too), and in circumstances where we hadnt been winning them, then it's a positive improvement in fortunes. But we're getting back towards what we should be expecting, not to our best IMO.

We're still not there yet, thought I emphasized this in my post? Our passing was encouraging and it we put together some excellent one touch passing moves second half, with Stevie at the helm of most of them.

It's all down to confidence and our defence is providing the basis for it. I'd be tempted to stick to the same back four now, it's performing and the less it changes the better it will be. Good to have the likes of Agger back on the bench, with Johnson and Aurelio still to come. That strength in depth is only visible when our 'understudies' are performing and by god they are at the moment. Kudos to them. Our squad may not be as bad as people have made it out.

I agree re the defence. I've never thought our squad depth was a major concern, other than maybe up front. But at the start of the season, the idiot media made an absolute mountain of an issue of our bench at Spurs, in comparison to their's, and i said at the time, we were missing something like 5 or 6 international players, without which, any matchday 18 might look weaker.

I am not pointing the finger to every fan mate, just to the ones who are fairly negative and post in here. I am not saying they are less of a fan too, as they are entitled to their own opinion but I have also been disappointed by the team this season, but you won't see me getting my knickers in a twist after each bad result.

As I used to say, it's all about the 'bigger picture'.

I'm not on about OTT reactions to bad results, but everyone who IS actually a Liverpool fan (and not just here on a windup) wants Rafa to succeed and turn it around. Even if they're negative and post in here.

There's not an ounce of any negative poster (who's genuinely a Red) that doesnt want the negative viewpoints to be proved wrong.

Hmm, have you read Bob The Charmer's posts? Just have a look in the match thread.

Doesn't mean he's not a fan in his own way though, but being obnoxious out of frustration is out of order for me. The more we pull ourselves together, fans and players alone, the better and easier it will translate to matters on the pitch.

Yeah but you're missing the point.

Whatever you think of people's negativity, they're being negative because they want the club to get back to the top and they dont think it's going to happen under the current regime.

Dont you think they'd like to be wrong in that opinion? Given that they want the club to get back to the top?

Of course they would. Stop being such a silly boy.

I'm not missing the point as I was agreeing with you.

I just think that even though they've got their own opinions about how the team should play, under the fact that Rafa's job is fairly 'secure' they should 'swallow the pill' and try to pull ranks behind the team and the manager, rather than being obnoxious and negative.

I know that you don't believe that things that are said in forums translates onto a footballer's psyche but I personally think that they certainly feel the current malaise and it does affect their confidence.

Still not addressing the point i was making though.

You suggested that some 'negative' fans would be disappointed about the prospect of Rafa turning things around - and that's nonsense mate. No Liverpool fan doesnt WANT Rafa to turn it around and make us successful.

                      Where are you living nowadays?

I'm in England at the moment though I'm moving back to Perth in around one week's time unfortunately.

I agree with your point, but I'm a bit suspicious. Some clearly don't like the man; they're in an exclusive minority but they still exist, believe me.

I'm not disagreeing with that, although i cant imagine any Liverpool fan not liking Rafa, although i imagine there are some who dont. I love the fella, his character and wit are likeable and he makes me chuckle with the ways he messes with reporters' heads. If it was about liking him, he could manage the club for life. Unfortunately, it's a results business.

I figured you must've been in england. Seeing the missus then, i assume? She deserves a medal

Yes she does, I couldn't agree more.

Going to read 'The Guardian' now mate, talk tomorrow.

Much as it makes me question my sanity, i imagine that i could discuss football with you for hours. Or until one of us commits suicide, anyway
