The Guardian confirms broughton is now Chairman. here's my favourite quote from the article, the yanks say:

Having grown the club this far we have now decided together to look to sell the club to owners committed to take the club through its next level of growth and development.

They are really, really going!!! :-)

Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of the British Airways chairman Martin Broughton to the same role at their club. Broughton has been brought in to oversee the sale of the club by the owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The Americans, who have asked Barclays Capital to lead the search for a new buyer, made the move after the club's major lenders, the Royal Bank of Scotland, insisted on the appointment of an independent chairman. As well as his work with British Airways, Broughton is the deputy president of the Confederation of British Industry and chaired the British Horseracing Board from 2004 to 2007. He will work alongside the managing director, Christian Purslow, the commercial director, Ian Ayre, and the financial director, Philip Nash, in the search for a potential buyers.

"I am excited and honoured to be taking up this position," said Broughton. "I will run this sale process in the right way, for the benefit of the club and its fans. Liverpool is one of the world's greatest clubs and my aim is to try and ensure that we find new owners who are able to build on the club's recent improved financial performance in order to help deliver sporting success."

Hicks and Gillett had initially instructed the club's chief executive, Christian Purslow, to find £100m of outside investment to reduce the club's £237m debt. But with that still unresolved and issues over funding for a new stadium in Stanley Park and providing a substantial transfer budget for the manager, Rafael Benítez, becoming increasingly significant, the Americans have decided their best option is to sell up, admitting they have taken the club as far as they can.

"Owning Liverpool Football Club over these past three years has been a rewarding and exciting experience for us and our families," said Tom Hicks and George Gillett via a statement on the club's website. "Having grown the club this far we have now decided together to look to sell the club to owners committed to take the club through its next level of growth and development.

"We are delighted that Martin Broughton has agreed to take the position of Chairman, working alongside the club's excellent senior management team. Martin is a distinguished business leader of excellent judgment and with a great reputation. He is a genuine football supporter and will seek to oversee the sales process in the best interests of the club and its supporters."

Several parties have expressed interest in Liverpool over the recent weeks but only one, The Rhone Group, has submitted an official offer since Purslow's global hunt for possible investors began last year. The deadline on their proposed offer of £110m for a 40% stake passed last Monday.

Broughton is as about as big hitter as you can possibly get in Business with ties to just about everyone globally, we will be sold and fast. Can only be good news and hopefully lessons learned moving forward

It does make your wonder about our boardroom. If we had deep pocketed owners with the track record of our boardroom members. We could possible be 'THE' Biggest football Brand in the world by a long stretch.

Broughton seems a class act. I have confidence in him.

You don't get to have his CV and not be highly competent and intelliegent. If there are buyers, I am sure he'll find them. If he doesn't it will be because they dont' exist for the price demanded.

Intelligent? He's a Chav fan from Fulham

Yeah he seemed really assured of himself and obviously his CV is unbelievable. Who cares who he supports, the bloke's a professional.

Look at it from your own angle, if you had a job to do for a Chelsea fan, a job that the whole of your industry was watching you do to see the results, would you sabotage that work, do a lesser job, or would you be proffessional, and see your reputation increase by doing your best ?

Obviously though, if he was a Scum fan then the job would be crap, and highly costly for them when you came to do the bill for your work, and you'd care less about your cred.
