Roy Hodgson Attacks Rafael Benitez’s Big Money

Liverpool Manager Roy Hodgson Attacks Rafael Benitez’s Big Money Signings And Plans January Arrivals

Boss wary of January transfer window

      29-Oct-2010 3:37:00 PM

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has insisted he will use the January market to land players at the "right price" and attacked Rafael Benitez's transfer record.

Hodgson, 63, has endured a disastrous start to his Anfield career as his side currently sit in the Premier League relegation zone. Reports have emerged this week, however, that owners New England Sports Ventures are prepared to sanction a fresh wave of investment in players as long as they represent future value.

Speaking to the club's official website, Hodgson hoped to compete with "Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter" for the right calibre of stars to revitalise his squad.

"If we want the right quality, we have got to be prepared to pay the right price," the ex-Fulham boss said.

"The owners know that perfectly well. We have got to make certain that if we go out and spend £20m, we are getting a £20m player.

"We want to be attracting the players that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter are chasing. It would be nice to think that we can shop at a high level.

"I'm like all managers in that I'm wary of the January transfer window. I think it can be dangerous as clubs try to correct mistakes.

"But, having said that, we are going to be very interested in trying to improve our squad in January. There is no question about that. I am sure we will sign players."

Hodgson added: "What I would hope to do is get this group of players playing well enough so we don't need to panic.

"Then I can say to the owners, 'If we are going to spend a lot of money, let's get the right man.'

"I don't want to spend half the money that might be available on someone for the sake of buying when the player we actually want might not be available until the summer.

"The lucky thing is that we are rebuilding around several top-class players. We have got Reina, Carragher, Gerrard, Torres, Kuyt - it's not as if we are rebuilding from nothing."

Hodgson also aimed a swipe at the recruitments made by predecessor Benitez after Glen Johnson and Alberto Aquilani failed to make an impact.

He said: "I think you can pay an awful lot of money for poor players and you can pay not very much money for very good ones - it is all to do with how good your scouting and your eye is.

"There are a lot of things here that the club has got to get right. We have got a lot more expensive failures on our list than good players that we have brought in for next to nothing.

"Free transfers don't necessarily mean that you have got a bargain. My experience of them has been very mixed. You need to be sure that the player you get can do the job you want from him."

Just **** off Woy. Are you referring to Poulsen and Konchesky signings? His appointment has to be the biggest ****up after the epic swindle of the club by the 2 cowboys. Even Souness has more class than him!!

a lot more expensive failures? wtf???

        Alonso
        Masher
        Torres

        big successes worth more now.

aquiliani and keane nearly got money back and Johnson is hardly a failure.

the only real big moneyy failure i see is Babel.

This interview actually disgusts me. With wages he's paid about £8 million on an aging Konchesky whos worse than Insua (who at least could put a decent cross in and would keep improving) and the same on Poulsen who is amongst one of our worse signings ever. Note he doesn't list his signings in the group of top class players. I'm going to be absolutely gutted if they let him loose with a decent amount of money in January.

Can you imagine January and fudgson still in charge, and him having money to spend it would be a complete nightmare, himbuying more second rate players and blaming king Rafa for it. HODGSON DO THE RIGHT THING AND **** OFF.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Those stats have to make you question why he was appointed in the first place. Ok so he has better records in the footballing back waters, but surely it's his Premiership record and his record in big competitions that counts and his record there is poor

                      Serious?!

If the NESV are as stats-driven as what is to be believed then surely Hodgson won't last much longer?! Those stats are dire. He's absolutely nowhere near good enough to manage us. **** it, he's nowhere near good enough to visit us as an opposing manager even, unless he's managing the formidable Farnborough Town.

Get him out. Get him out now.

Actually the more I think about it, the more I'm sure he's an insider for Ferguson or something.

Take Redknapp for example. He did well at Pompey, ****ed off, got Southampton relegated and then went back to Pompey. Hero.

The thing is, everything that Hodgson says, does or thinks, is completely detrimental to our great club. He's anti-Liverpool in every-which-way.

                        And a cunt.

It's laughable. He then goes on to name Carragher, Gerrard, Kuyt, Torres and Reina as a top class base to work from - three of those were bought by his predecessor. He's a loser and piss taker.

I cant say i saw much in that article which points to him slagging off Rafa.

What i did see, and think was absolutely idiotic, was the way he basically tells everyone that we've potentially got a lot of money to spend.

Great piece of work, that was.

Just seen this. Can't vouch for the integrity of the article though.

“He was one of the best coaches I worked with but he was nowhere near being the best manager,” one former Blackburn player told Goal.com UK.

“The spirit just drained out of the team and nobody wanted to play for him anymore. We would come into work every day and be moaning about training before it had even started because we didn’t like his methods.

“Some players weren’t happy and it was obviously difficult for him – but you have to change things up when it’s going badly. He was too passive and was just hoping the results would turn by themselves.

“He wasn’t proactive enough to move away from his comfort zone of being on the training ground and organising how to defend set-pieces.

“Once two players squared up on the fight and he just stood there doing nothing – it was like he had no idea how to handle the players anymore, other than to tell them where they should be when he was pointing at a tactics board.”
