Some managers are a success straight away, some take time. But in most circumstances the biggest clubs take on managers who have proved themselves elsewhere. Less risk that way. Yes, Guardiola was a new comer at Barca. But he had been managing their reserve side and knew the philosophy of the club. He was a "boot room" appointment if you like.Originally posted by Daniel Torres View PostI don't know about this "time" issue - I wonder if you're a top manager, you're a top manager. Look at Guardiola - if we were Barca, we'd have been saying the same thing. Mourinho hadn't been a manager long before Porto (if at all?) - some will just fail and fall by the wayside, Klinsmann for example.
I guess I'm wondering if the top managers actually need "time" or are they instantly successful regardless?
Coyles a gamble. Of course he is. But there are bigger gambles. I'd be positive if he got appointed.Forwards.......

I think there is a big difference between Coyle and Hodgson though. The former is progressive and on an upward trajectory as a manager. The latter was really neither.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostCoyle would be another flavour of the month appointment. Granted he's showing great potential but he'd need to do a hell of a lot more before I'd even consider him. If he ends up as our next manager...I'll be in despair. Is that all you need to do to become LFC manager?
I'm not sure that we will be getting a current top rank manager and in some ways I think we could do with a young manager with energy and a willingness to take risks. He's not a dream choice but honestly I don't see anyone out there who would be for me. While I wouldn't be overjoyed by his appointment I would certainly not despair."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

* seems to get more out of his players than their generally agreed level
* plays very attractive, expansive football
* seems to be very forward thinking
* has a lot of hunger, desire and ambition
* seems to be modern in terms of his footballing philosophy
* seems to generate good unity, team spirit and 'feel good' factor in his squads

The question is how big gamble NESV is willing to take when they pick our next manager.
The no gamble option is Rafa. They know what they will get if they appoint him.
A manager like Coyle could be a success but also another Roy and that is a mistake we can't afford to make.
The next manager MUST be a success or else it will take a very long time to even get back into the top four.Stop the cyberhate

from now on I will skip talking about our finances. That is a promise and will save myself from looking like a

I suppose at least you stopped short of calling it a 'no brainer'.
Honestly I think it is pretty clear given the history with some of the squad that Rafa is a gamble. It is one I would take but perhaps I'm not in possession of the full facts.
Not so sure that any of the current teams are really progressing at a rate that makes me think we have to appoint an instant success or wait for my beard to go entirely grey for us to compete. We can't afford to bugger up managerially and in terms of player recruitment certainly but then that is pretty obvious and more or less always true."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

That's just silly mate. I know you want him back, and so do i, but to say he represents 'no gamble' is really not true. Every manager is a gamble and rafa, with some of the baggage he left behind, would certainly be a gamble.Originally posted by Arn View PostThe question is how big gamble NESV is willing to take when they pick our next manager.

I wouldnt compare Coyle to Hodgson. As someone else said, Coyle is on an upward trajectory in terms of his management career and stock. If he reaches 63 without having won anything or achieved much, then fair enough, but he's at the complete other end of the managerial scale, compared to Hodgson.
