I dont think he particularly absolves anyone of all blame, or points the finger at anyone in particular.

He's right in a sense, but you also have to realise that the squad that beat United 4-1 and R Madrid 4-0 has lost Alonso, Mascherano, Hyppia, Arbeloa, Yossi, Riera, who all played a big part in us finnishig second that season.
