That's because Agger plays on the left. Having either Coates or Skrtel there as well would be unnecessary duplication and leave a gap somewhere else.Originally posted by kris90210 View PostOh, and another thing. Did anyone else think it was slightly strange that Coates played on the right side of defence, and Skrtel on the left? Seemed very odd to me. We don't do that when Agger is playing..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Being completely objective here and it's not about bashing Lucas, Joe Allen is massively superior in that role, especially with the ball.Originally posted by Gibbo View PostDrop Lucas
No chance.
I somewhat agree but it isn't happening.Originally posted by Pablo1981 View PostGerrard is more deserving of being dropped IMO.

I think your wrong there, Lucas is much better at breaking up play.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostBeing completely objective here and it's not about bashing Lucas, Joe Allen is massively superior in that role, especially with the ball.

Big decision Brendan has on his hands, Sahin can make a difference to this side but who does he drop? On todays evidence Allen doesn't deserve to be, and Lucas provides the best cover to the defence.
Gerrard could find himself in a position where its play on the right or bench. Although it would take a manager with massive bollocks to do it.The times they are a changin'.

I'd have taken that result before the game. It seemed risky starting with Sterling and Coates, but after a jittery first 20 minutes we dictated play. It was very encouraging and considering how young most of our team were today things bode very well for the future. It felt like Liverpool were playing again. Felt really sorry for Skrtel, he was immense prior to the back-pass.

I don't think him not being explosive now is any more or less of a problem there than in midfield. Do take your other points, things that had entered into my mind too, I guess I just feel on balance this way wins out. Primarily because we now have three players who are masters of midfield control and economy, which is vital to our gameplan and has always been Gerrard's one weak point.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostNo because Gerrard is not explosive enough anymore to play that role and you lose a striker if you do put him there. We need bodies in the box and Gerrard's tendencies as a midfielder will make him drop back too often.
Up front his class can still do damage, be it with final ball / shooting or albeit decreasingly so these days, beating players. I'd sooner sacrifice Borini than one of Lucas, Allen and Sahin. Dropping off from a forward 3 is not the problem it is if you're in a two, and the last time he was part of a front two (well, in behind a front man) it seemed to work quite well!
Accept though it is far from a straightforward decision and we could all sit here arguing this all day. Nice decision to have to make!
