A "few" more? I think the squad is pretty strong as it is to be honest. Another forward would be nice, but beyond that we're pretty well covered imo. I guess a left back would be good too! That we're playing Johnson out of position says a lot for me.

When was the last time we so controlled midfield against a top team? It feels like ages.

I don't think him not being explosive now is any more or less of a problem there than in midfield. Do take your other points, things that had entered into my mind too, I guess I just feel on balance this way wins out. Primarily because we now have three players who are masters of midfield control and economy, which is vital to our gameplan and has always been Gerrard's one weak point.

Up front his class can still do damage, be it with final ball / shooting or albeit decreasingly so these days, beating players. I'd sooner sacrifice Borini than one of Lucas, Allen and Sahin. Dropping off from a forward 3 is not the problem it is if you're in a two, and the last time he was part of a front two (well, in behind a front man) it seemed to work quite well!

Accept though it is far from a straightforward decision and we could all sit here arguing this all day. Nice decision to have to make!

That's why I'd drop him from that midfield three. Exactly that reason

I think he should be competing for one of the front three positions now (assuming Sahin performs), and can then fill in in CM again when someone gets injured/suspended.

I think we will sell adam and spearing and go for Dempsey. Fingers crossed we get a striker though.

A decent performance, Reina flapped at the first and skrtel total lack of concentration for the second.

I'm getting a bit worried about Gerrard, his performances over the last 12 months have been very average.

Allen looked good, sterling did well but will improve greatly. Kelly is definitely regressing.

Looking forward to seeing the sahin dimension added as we're playing with more pace.

Oh, and another thing. Did anyone else think it was slightly strange that Coates played on the right side of defence, and Skrtel on the left? Seemed very odd to me. We don't do that when Agger is playing.

skrtel better on right, agger better on the left. seen coates in clips playing from left side, mostly, but can play either.
makes more sense to play him left sided CB with skrtel, maybe right sided if with agger.

Sterling's the real bonus IMO. It's fair to say that,young as he is,he's stepped up to the mark and saved us £10M in the process. Won't play every game of course but I think he'll be good for maybe 20/25 appearances this season. Looked ace for the Youth/Reserve teams over the last couple of years but you never know for sure till you give someone a go and he really looks a talent.

From missing him no end to this even being a possibility speaks volumes really. I think if he's fit then we should play him ahead of Shelvey still for the time being, but you're right he's certainly got a fight on his hands.

If any player should be worried about their place in the side it's Stevie for me at the moment! He needs to step up.

Allen was superb, but Lucas is such an important member of the squad - and we play better with him 99% of the time - that it's inconceivable he's not an automatic starter if fit
