    There's a reason for that.

A draw tonight and Basel winning would have been a worse result than a three nil hiding and a defeat for Basel.

All of their players would walk into our team while none of ours would get into theirs. They were good to watch.

I know at least one of our players who would walk into that team... because there's **** all chance of him running

I'll be honest here lads, the biggest disappointment tonight isn't the result, its the fact I've made myself two glasses of Robinson's Orange Barley squash and both times they have been woefully under strength. I'm not a big squash drinker by any means, but having a bad case of the thirst on not one but two separate occasions tonight led me to draw upon my normally reliable cordial making abilities. Yet like our beloved reds, I failed badly when it mattered most. Rest assured next time I get the urge I will go full strength, there will be no repeat, there can't be. You have my word.

We couldn't press all night. Playing once a week and pressing all game is impossible. Never mind twice a week. Rodgers played it right. He went with Balo and had a go. We came close a couple of times to getting in. If we score it's a different game, a real battle. We didn't, we tired out and they were clinical.

You can't sleep for one moment around Ronaldo. A simple give and go. Gerrard was sitting just in front of the CB's and facing up Ronaldo and there's no danger. Gerrard follows the ball, and Ronaldo has the head start on Lovren, running straight at him for the return. It's an inch perfect ball by James that Lovren narrowly misses. Ronaldo has run through the gap between the CB's and though Skrtel sees the run, Ronaldo is too fast to catch, the ball lands perfectly into his stride and it's a one touch half volley that just evades the dive of Mignolet. Perfect in every way, but I think it was avoidable.

The second, too many errors. The third is the same. At least the second had a perfect looped header by Benzema. Real had the luck IMO in the first half, but they didn't in the second where they could have had more. Find lines.

The only issue in the CL is you have a chance to showcase the club. If they give Real a really good game, potential signings would have looked at that and thought that's the place to play. Now? More difficult.

Our whole passing game has disintegrated, we can't press for more than 15 minutes in any given game, our attacking set pieces having been freakishly good last season are now back to being total dross, we must be the worst team in Europe at defending set pieces, the team spirit that was so evident last season looks to have disappeared (too much upheaval to what was a close-knit squad?), our goalkeeper is ****ing rubbish, Johnson is finished, Lovren's ****, Skrtel's ****, Balotelli is ****.

Apart from that it's going pretty well.
I agree but no team can press non stop for 90 minutes. You have to be able to press at certain situations ie pressing triggers. The other issue we have is Steven Gerrard cant press at all so one player not joining in could break down the whole system.

So we end up not pressing and we cant put two lines of 4 infront of Simon mignolet. Basically we cant defend in open play and we cant defend at set pieces

Not really, you left out Gerrard being a bigger and bigger problem, the Sakho situation and Brendan isn't dealing with any of the problems. Last season, I thought he addressed problems efficiently but now I find he's practically ignoring them. Have a very bad feeling about the season.

What about the players in front of Gerrard ?

On a few occasions Madrid were passing the ball around just in front of our box while Mario, Sterling and Coutinho were sauntering around admiring the talent. The defensive work has to be done from the front, which isn't happening anymore.

When you press the whole team has to press in unison. If only the front three press and the midfield 3 don't then one dinked ball over them takes 3 players out of the game straight away and you have the ball in midfield in time and space.

If the front 3 pusb on, the rest of the team have to push on the exact amount of metres otherwise gaps open up which clever teams will exploit. I think it was arrigo sacchis philosophy about there bring 25 metres between your back line and striker to stop the opposition playing.

If the front 3 move up by 10 yards but only 2 of the midfield 3 push on, then you have a 10 yard gap open up between the Allen & Henderson and Steven Gerrard.

For pressing to work I think it has to be as a team from back to front.
