It doesn't prove anything though does it? Kenny's teams used to lose to the SCUM regularly but win the league more regularly. Houllier's team won 4 league matches in a row against SCUM but didn't compete in the title race.

Exactly, it is not about winning against specific sides, it is about accumulating more points over 38 games in a season (Not 18 games as some seem to think).

normally, I would agree, but the standards required to win the title are now a lot higher. Take out the results of chelsea, arsenal and manu and us against each other from the last two seasons. The results against the rest of the league balance each other out, but the term '6-pointer' actually means something. the difference between a win or a loss against a top team is 6 points. If we had beaten chelsea, and manu this season, what would the point difference be? We would have 6 more, and they would both have 3 less. do the same against Arsenal, and its clearly a 3 horse race.

Yes but in same vein, we could have beaten Bolton and manure lost them and we had beaten the blue****e and chavski lost to them it would be the same effect.

But you're changing two results there rather than one. These games are clearly more significant.

After the loss to Bolton on Sep 30th I lost all hope of the title race, we were NEVER in it after that. Call it realism if ya like.
I said after the Arsenal defeat that we will not make the CL next season and I still stand by that.
Six defeats in 38 matches will barely get you a top 2 spot, never mind in 20 matches.
I was so angry today that I had to close the door in my computer room so the wee fella would not see his daddy in a foul, bad mood.
