And just to clarify, I'm not disputing the fact that overplaying young players can have a negative effect later in their career, nor am I disputing the benefits of resting them when necessary.

I'm just questioning this logic of randomly dropping an in form player for certain matches on the baseless assumption that another player (of a completely different make up) may or may not have been injured at some stage as a partial consequence of possibly being overplayed earlier in their career.

If the club decided to rest Raheem against Villa, I'd have no problems with that, if they have assessed him and think he's in need of a rest, then who am I to argue. But as a fan, with no access to this information, I just don't see how anyone could call for him to be rested when he's showing absolutely no signs of fatigue and have no idea at all what impact it may or may not have on his later career.

I do agree with the idea of tactically resting him every now and then, the last thing we need is to overplay him and get him injured. It's happened with Wilshere and Walcott in the past. We did the same to Michael Owen.

I think we might bench him for either this or the Ludogorets game actually. We've got two midweek games this month (Middlesboro being the other) so I'd be tempted to bench him for both of them.

I agree with the resting him idea, although I would be interested to see what Suarez's schedule was like as a youngster (although he is obviously not as pace orientated a player as Sterling).

On the other hand I think people are underestimating Villa a tad. They have started the season well and I think we need to forget how **** they were last season. They aren't a great team but not one we can take for granted either.

Although you have a point about Rooney, I have to say I never imagined him as someone who would actually give a **** enough to try and help a younger player, much less by his own initiative.
