I think he is. His career is on the wane for sure now, but at his best he was pivotal and even then didn’t get the accolades. You don’t play the number of games he has in Teams that were hunting down and beating one of the most powerful squads in the history of football. I don’t think he gets the recognition as to how good he was when we won the League and the CL.

I hope he gets the game management he deserves as it definitely hasn’t been good for him to consistently be one of our only for midfielders when Keita, Ox, Thiago and Curtis have been injured.

    I know that

I was just commenting on what was said in the tweet

Think we will have to wait until he is gone to see how we all judge him (meaning the fanbase as a whole) but think he is rated quite highly and if he is underrated at present that might be down to people judging the player he is now rather than looking at the overall picture.

That overall picture will come back into view again once he is retired imo.

I know for his first couple seasons with us I thought he would flop. Think at the time I thought he had talent but not the mentality, but boy did he prove that opinion wrong and then some.

As you said, a player does not keep his place in one of the greatest teams the club has ever had without deserving it.

At his peak he was crucial in many way not least being one of those players that become the glue that holds things together.

At his peak he was a great player for us as well as a great captain.

Time may have caught up with him now, but that cannot change what was and for me that "what was" is his legacy in my eyes and how I will view him when he is no longer playing for us.

Win the Europa league this coming season and he can retire knowing he is in a very elite group of players, even for a club like Liverpool, in terms of what he won with the team.

Most people tend to say he has been one of the better/best captains the club has had on and off of the pitch but that he is now in the latter stages of his career and slowing down greatly.

For me he is the best captain we have has since the start of the 1990s, I have to go back to the 1980s to find a few names from my time watching the team that I rate a bit higher than him on that front.

Granted you will get a few online voices that will stick the knife into him without acknowledging the good stuff, but generally I get the impression he will have a very good legacy at the club after he hangs up his boots.
