Where they are from is not important, the quality is all that should be important.

Obviously, but developing local players is very important. It's better to have a good mix of local and non-local players. If we can find the best local talent and help them to develop into players of Fowler and Gerrard's calibre then that has to be positive for the team, the area and the supporters.

Nope, the only important thing is the players are good enough. Why they are from should never be important, just the quality.Originally posted by TheElephantMan View PostObviously, but developing local players is very important. Quality is all that really matters, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be good to have some local lads in the squad.
If there are two players of identical quality and professionalism, and one is from Smithdown Road and the other is from The Gabon, we should be choosing the local lad. But that's about as far as it extends for me.Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

From an emotional standpoint he is right. Not everything is governed by cold hard facts Matt. Fans love to see local lads. As long as the lads are good enough I see no problem. Obviously if we are getting inferior players then we should change tactics.
So respectfully I disagree that its never important as to where the players are from. A player that supports the club he plays for is always going to care more. Im not saying they will be technically better.
I think sometimes we lose sight of just being a Liverpool fan.*Except Michael, who died.

Many of our best players were Everton fans in their younger days.Originally posted by Alex View PostFrom an emotional standpoint he is right. Not everything is governed by cold hard facts Matt. I think that is a recent thing, we have had plenty of great sides not based around local players. If they care more and are not as good then they shouldn't be the player we go for. This logic would have gave us Bradley Orr and Scott Dann.Originally posted by Alex View PostFrom an emotional standpoint he is right. Not everything is governed by cold hard facts Matt. No one complained about our 86 side not having local players or our first ever side being pretty much entirely Scottish.

No one is complaining about the lack of local players though. Just saying it would be nice to have some more world class ones. Imagine if we unearthed another Fowler or Gerrard. That is the sort of player we have no chance of signing at the moment from another club. A player with total loyalty to the club. I think we have been lucky to hold on to someone like Gerrard, especially over the latter years. Someone of his abilities can play in any team he likes.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostI think that is a recent thing, we have had plenty of great sides not based around local players. Rooney is the only local player they have had through their system I'd have had.Originally posted by ronanm View PostBest players no matter where they are from. Still, the odd Scouser has slipped through the net. Everton seem to have a good network of local scouts too.

Or just imagine more players like Suarez and Alonso. I couldn't care less where our players where born. Quality is the only important factor.Originally posted by Alex View PostNo one is complaining about the lack of local players though. Just saying it would be nice to have some more world class ones. Players we are constantly in fear of leaving?Originally posted by Mattshark View PostOr just imagine more players like Suarez and Alonso. I couldn't care less where our players where born. Quality is the only important factor.
I know what you are saying though. But local players are more loyal in my mind. Therefor a world class local player is more likely to stay than someone else.
Edit: Anyway Matt we are talking about Youth level here. Not fully fledged internationals like the ones you mentioned.Last edited by Alex; 10-01-13, 11:05 AM.*Except Michael, who died.
