We already signed a 32 year old, so can't really see that as the problem itself, but if they see it as a sound investment is another thing.

I'd like Alonso back, but I'm not sure he is the type of player we are missing. Really need someone more mobile further up the pitch. We already have Gerrard that have sorta moved back to that role, and we have Allen and Henderson that can somewhat fill in the role.

Think there is better investment for us elsewhere, and it really sound like just an easy story for a journo to make up.

Rodgers is interested in Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso who is still revered on Merseyside but £10million for a 31-year-old is against Henry’s model.

I don't see how Xabi is second choice to Mkhitaryan they are completely different players
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I don't care if he is 41, a player of that quality and calibre only serves to help the youngsters improve and give us another old experienced head on the pitch. Something we seriously lacked last season.

Toure, Xabi and Gerrard are 3 top class experienced, been there and done it, players. They would be an amazing backbone to help the youngsters.

The only thing i would be concerned about is the price, i would not pay over 10m no chance.

I'm sure that Ballague said on twitter that there was no love lost between the two.
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

I'd love him back, one of my favorite players of recent times, but how would he fit into the Rodgers 4-3-3 system?

I don't see how he could fit with his style of play so unless Rodgers is having a big rethink on the tactics for next season I'm not convinced he is a realistic target as opposed to newspaper bollocks that we want to believe for emotional reasons.

He can both defend and set up great attacking moves with his passing.

He's far from prolific as he usually sits too deep, but he can score goals on the occcasions he's free to get in the right position (and occasionally when in a position he as no right to score from).

He as a killer free kick.

Is there any system where a player with his skills can't fit in?

I get your point, a quality player can always be accommodated, I'm just wondering how? If you only have 3 midfielders, and as you say he is traditionally a deep lying midfielder, how would he be utilized in the Rodgers system?

If he replacing Lucas or would they both sit deep with a point man in midfield? Would that be more or less offensive that a reverse triangle? Do you think Alonso can switch positions mid game like we sometimes saw the front two of the midfield triangle do this season or would Alonso and Lucas playing together make us more rigid and less fluid?

As I say, he's one of my favorite players of recent times so its not that I don't want us to buy him. I'm just wondering if he is a natural fit to the Rodgers system or would Rodgers adapt the system to accommodate Alonso?

I will jizz in my pants if we sign Alonso.

Alonso back would be awesome. Xabi is world class and as we've seen those players are difficult to secure with no CL football. He is 31 and has no pace to lose. Play him in the middle then Gerrard can once again become our goal scoring midfielder further up the pitch (which is what Micky Ryan was going to be).

Guys, he isn't coming back, he has moved on, so have we, deal with it. Now Murray has won Wimbledon there will be no more mention of this or any other of the nonsense they write whilst bored. (For a few days anyway)
