Thanjk you.

I'm at a conference in London on the 13th. At what time is Rafa's talk?
. Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
Rafa, I wish it were true mate that not many people question zonal marking anymore. I think I was watching Champions League highlights last Wednesday night on Sky and the presenter asked Ray Wilkins what was the point of zonal marking and he said something along the lines of "no idea". And yet the ignorant buffoon wonders why he doesnt get a job in coaching or management. It all seemed aimed towards fitting that particular agenda. Watching the foreigners doing it, not understanding their methods and so automatically they must be inferior to ours.
For all the progress and advancements that have been made by having foreign players and managers in our league, the game in this country is still in many aspects a throwback to the 70s and 80s. It's still an old boys network and it's perpetuated by the morons at Sky. It's why a Champions League winning manager like Rafa is routinely derided while a fool like Hodgson is canonised and made England manager.
You might as well say you shouldn't bother about the opposition at all and just concentrate on making sure the ball doesn't manage to get into your goal.

Its a well known fact, backed up with reams of scientific evidence, that man-to-man marking has never resulted in concession of a goal from a set-piece.

Seems to me more or less the exact way you would describe zonal marking if you were attempting to counter the 'no zone ever scored a goal' argument on its own level.

It's absolutely ridiculous, isn't it. Then they wonder why England never do well in the major tournaments.
You say that, but a progressive England manager is unlikely to do much better since the players are a product of the same environment that produced so many unenlightened English coaches.
I was watching Goals on Sunday yesterday and Gary Megson was one of the guests along with Peter Reid. I don't know if he is currently managing (he was recently sacked by Sheffield Wednesday IIRC) but I'm pretty sure that he said he used zonal marking. He may not be one of the more respected English coaches but it's nice to see that at least some of them can see beyond the tired old familiar English methods.

Watching a Megson team would make you wish you had Hodgson as Manager. A few of my mates are Wednesday fans and there eyes bled on a regular basis when Megson was there
