I don't think you can read too much into him starting a lot in pre-season, our situation for much of it has been that Sturridge has been unfit / returning from injury and we are preparing for the start of the season without Suarez - due to the ban. I think with the squad as it stands at the moment he is likely to start the early games in the season because of this, what happens beyond that depends on how well he does. Whether he was considered a squad player or a first team player when we bought him is irrelevant, if he does well when he plays he will get picked, if he does badly he won't.

I agree, but you're missing the point I was trying to make (admittedly it wasn't explained very well). I'll elaborate tomorrow though as typing is getting me shouted at right now.

IMO he was bought as a squad player. Be great if he can force his way into the first 11 and become a top player for us. Absolutely nothing wrong with having a strong squad.

He's done well pre season but some people getting bit carried away... early days yet but he has done well thus far IMO.

Sorry I wasn't really replying to your post in particular, it was more a kind of general comment on some of the recent stuff in the thread, your post just seemed the easiest to quote.

If Suarez stays the fact that he would probably be third choice central striker is a huge plus.

Just to explain my point though, there have been a few harsh comments about Aspas already, the easiest one to find being JohnDoe’s.

Pace, strength, technique and finishing are attributes that can be seen relatively easily in a player. It really boggles my mind sometimes how "taboo" it is to assess a player "early".

It's painfully obvious that in all of those categories, Aspas is average at best. It didn't take much to realize last pre-season that Borini isn't anything special either. It's just blatantly obvious, right in front of your eyes.

You want to wait six months in order to determine that neither player is going to be a big contributor for us, go ahead and "wait". I'll stick my neck out and say that this is my prediction. Meh.

But even excluding these types of comments, the general condescending theme that he’s no better than what we have, only a squad player etc, although for some it may be a fair assessment of the player, for others it comes across as a cheap dig, whether it be at the player himself or FSG. I suppose it’s not too dissimilar to Moyes coming out and announcing that Rooney will be back-up for Van Persie.

So if this is the attitude towards him during pre-season when he’s playing well and scoring goals, how long will it take to descend into abuse if he gets off to a slow start in the league?


So basically the issue isn’t whether he’ll be a squad player or not (I hope he is as it means Suarez will be staying ) it’s the negative undertone evident in a lot of the posts which I've found bizarre as on the evidence so far he's looked a good signing.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean it's basically the reason I haven't been posting much on the site over the summer, I can't be arsed dealing with all the **** stirred up in the press and all the speculation about somebody leaving/arriving or whether this player is good enough etc.

I just want the season to start and the transfer window to close so that the madness can be over (for now) and we can get on with the football, and have some evidence to back up our opinions, rather than letting over active imaginations develop all kinds of scenarios that have little basis in reality.
