Best defender at the club for me and the switch to a back 3 has done wonders for the entire defence.

Surely he's a shout for best centre back in the league. Kompany has gone **** and is overrated anyway and the Chelsea pair have been a bit dodgy lately. On stats alone he'd be up there.

I have a feeling that the key is that all our defenders prefer getting into one on on duels and not covering in a pair. It seems to me that it is something we will need to address if we want to move back to a 4 at any point (which I suspect we will long term).

I'm not sure if we will move back this season, I think you're right long term but at the moment this formation is working for us.

3 goals conceded in the past 6 league outings is a real improvement for us defensively I also don't think there is any coincidence that this has also been at the time Lucas has been employed to shield the defence.

I think you are probably right about this season. Lucas + a back 3 seems to suit our players.

It'll be interesting to see if we maintain our form as teams adapt to playing against this system.

I guess having a fit Sturridge does give us the option to change to a back 4 if the situation calls for it.

Always the chance we'll see him give the Mario/Sturridge pairing an outing.

The next few matches will be telling in this regard. I think the 3-4-3 is our most solid formation to date as it plays to the strength of our players. Chelsea under Mourinho usually has our number tactically but only poor finishing separated us over the two semi-final legs.

Unlike our diamond formation, we don't have any glaring defensive weakness. With a back three, not only is there a better defensive shield there's also less onus on Mig to play with the ball at feet. Mig has regained his confidence as a result. Skrtel is doing what he does best when he sweeps, Sakho proving to everyone he's the stopper du jour and Can is a revelation. It's harder now to drive at us in the middle or overload our flanks. We've more passing avenues out of defense with Sakho's front-foot passing and Can's ability to play like a midfielder from deep.

I do think Can should play the centre role, he's more vocal and tactically better than Škrtel, so more suited for the sweeper role.

I remember saying last year vs West Ham at home in this thread just how good he was.

I think the physical teams play right into his hands - he has great strength and aerial ability. Who was it in the second half that tried to barge him off the ball, and he didn't even flinch and just played it forward as if he wasn't there?

I love the guy and have said from the very start that we should stick with him - yes he looks ungainly when passing, but he hits his man.

He'll have Lukaku in his pocket on Saturday
