If you read Luis' new book you can clearly understand his desire to play for Barca.
We got anywhere between £85-100m from them for Mascher and Luis so we cannot really complain as we pissed all that money up the wall.

He had been dying to move to Spain since he was 15 years old, that was his goal. Liverpool was just a stepping stone - same as Groningen, same as Ajax. He's just as likely, probably more likely infact, to go back and play for Ajax ahead of Liverpool.
I think we will have had the best out of him by far though. Some comfort I suppose.

Only chance of him ever coming back here, if he finds himself leaving Barca in the next two years, would be as a goodwill, mega-money purchase by new owners trying to earn favour with the fans, if FSG lost their bottle and sold us to some rich Arabian group.
He's gone, he's history and sure, aren't we better off overall as was frequently alluded to by some when talk of strengthening the overall team and squad was brought up after last season.

Finished his book this morning on my commute in to work. Love the guy to bits and I just get him, every single little frustration and aspect of his character makes complete sense to me, a pure genius on the pitch and seems a genuinely nice guy off it.
Felt sad that he does not really have that solid affection for LFC as I had hoped he would. No doubts that his affections are with Nacional>Barca>Ajax>LFC/Groningen.
Doesn't matter, cos we love him and we saw the very best of him. One day when he has retired he will look back and realise just how special his time with us was.

Nacional are his team and he refers to them in his book as being a rabid fan of them, much like some of the mentalists on here for Liverpool. I've no doubt that he saw this as a step to Barcelona - the section on his near move to Arsenal sounded like excuse making to me, but he did say he would have massively regretted leaving. Gerrard was a massive influence on him - but the overall impression from the book is "England - chapter closed - move on"

Luis Suarez has thanked his former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard for persuading him not to sign for Arsenal last summer.
Uruguay international Suarez came close to leaving Anfield for the Emirates after Arsenal attempted to trigger a £40 million release clause in his contract.
But although the move did not go through, with Liverpool feeling they were not legally obliged to sell, Suarez and his agents were reportedly close to taking legal action to force a transfer.
The striker subsequently signed a new Liverpool contract and went on to score 31 Premier League goals last season as his side came close to a first league title since 1990. He moved to Barcelona in a £75m deal this summer.
In an extract from his new autobiography, published in Sport, Suarez credits Liverpool skipper Gerrard with stopping him from joining a "lesser" club.
"It would have been a big error that I would have made had it not been for Steven Gerrard," he said. "We spoke about this when I went to Melwood [Liverpool's training ground] to pick up my things at the end of the summer and he said: 'You did the right thing, you waited until the best moment.'
"He had told me [the previous summer] to play well for Liverpool, give it another year and it will be Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona coming for you and then you can go where you want, because you have the quality to play at any of those three clubs."The times they are a changin'.
