It hasn't been the case for 15-20 years, in that time
McManaman, Owen, Arbeloa, Alonso (all Real Madrid), Mascherano and Suarez (Barcelona) and Torres (Chelsea) have moved up after leaving us, Sterling is almost certainly next, all of those were key players too
It averages out as one of our best players leaving for better things every couple of years.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
I wouldn't say Owen went on to better things. We had our best years as soon as he left and although he picked up a few medals at United, he hardly earned them and I imagine would swap every one of them to have played in Istanbul.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
Sad reality is that we are not the seen as a final destination club my most players, more of a stop off on the journey. It can change so quickly though.
