Listen Norbs, as someone who has spent the majority of his life living abroad in quite possibly one of the most multicultural environments on the planet, I can tell you learning additional languages are hard and it's not for everyone.

I would say it the responsibility of the club to make sure he gets up to speed, but for some people, it takes a very long time and personally I am not going to judge him on his lack of English.

English is one of those languages jammed packed full of arrogance, everybody expects people to speak it, and if they cant they treat them like they are stupid when in fact the majority of the world speaks at least two languages except England which I believe has the worst statistics in the world, especially white people. So Naby has been in the UK little over a year and only is coming to grips with English ... how long do you think it would take you to learn German if you moved there tomorrow.

Main thing is he is speaking English now, so all good

Have you lived in a foriegn country? Depending on the person it can take time to adjust to the cultures and the language. A lot of it is self confidence and not wanting to make a fool of yourself when trying to speak in another tongue. It can take time for everything to fall into place, especially in a place like Liverpool and the dialect in the immediate area. For example my former missus came to a few games with me. She can speak english like the queen. In Liverpool she was totally lost, especially in shop when she had to pay for things. She would just hold out a handfull of money and let the cashier take the amount needed

I have travelled the world working and moved away from the UK 20+ years ago. I have no issues with confidence or making a fool of myself with languages. I speak several fluently and many others not so fluent. At the other end of the scale, I have a couple of mates who struggle with confidence and making themselves look foolish, both of them have been living in countries with other tongues and neither of them can speak even the basic words and sentences

Totally agree with Nicey on that one. Also, you have to take into consideration the player's personality, whether he is shy or not. This does have an effect. Learning a new language is hard, unless you have learnt it since childhood. Naby already speaks at least 2 or more languages fluently. French being the official language in Guinea plus possibly other local languages or dialects. Then he has lived in Germany for a few years, so I expect him to at least navigate German as well.

First 18 years of my life were spent abroad, in either Arabic or Malay speaking countries (plus 2 years in PNG, where English was widely spoken). I took lessons in both Arabic and Malay, but for the life of me I could not pick up the languages. Whether it was laziness or just ineptitude, I don't know, but the only words I ever learnt were swear words, as you do.

However, Tok Pisin, the national language of PNG, was a barrel of laughs and I knew many phrases in that, probably cos it is so close to English aurally.

But yeah, some people just don't have a natural affinity with languages, and I was one of them. Me mother, on the other hand, was pretty much fluent in both, which isn't bad for a lass from Lancashire she reckons.

Yes I have lived in a foreign country. I lived in Spain for 13 months building a factory. I worked for a Danish engineering company, building a factory for an American company with a Spanish workforce. The project language was English.

In reality, it takes 5 minutes to learn "I'm sorry but my English isn't the best" and as long as he adds that to every conversation with a new person, then i'm sure he will be fine.

I actually think it is a miss on the clubs part not tracking this for the last year he was at Leipzig.......and intervening when he wasn't making progress
