How the f*ck did that happen? I'm struggling to imagine a (recent) crash could cause that, unless you crashed into some seriously vicious stinging nettles or something.

Which BMC riders have hit the ground this Tour? Not many I think.

          Ah.

          And yeurghhh.

I have just read up on varicose veins in cyclists and how to avoid them (vvs, not cyclists).

Talking of avoiding cyclists, it seemed to me loads of cars were giving me a particularly wide berth when passing me today. Maybe they saw the Flecha/Hoogerland crash. Or maybe that's just made me even more aware of it than usual.

How depressing. And not all that surprising.

              Fantastic victory by Greipel.

Smart play from Omega Pharma-Lotto having Gilbert attack on the final climb. Certainly disrupted the HTC leadout train.

Yep, good tactic. Exciting finish - shame that big ape Greipel won though.

i've started to get back into this again after about a 5 or 6 year gap. I used to love the days of Greg LeMond, Laurent Fignon, Stephen Roache, Indurain, Sean Kelly, Delgado etc

                      Ah good days...

I only really started getting into it in about 1990 so obviously you're older than I am.

You've picked a good year. It's been really exciting so far and it looks like there's going to be a real fight for yellow.

Neil, no one on the entire internet is older than you.

Yes it's been good so far, the mountain stages are what really make the race for me.

First proper mountain stage tonight (I'm in Australia!). Can't wait for it.

Some awesome climbs coming up over the next three stages...

Really looking forward to today's stage, it has the perfect setting for a big drama. However it can be ruined by a combination of Contador''s bad knee (if not a bluff) and the riders holding back a bit because of the many hard mountain stages still to come.

I hope we see a lot of attacking and not just a long grinding down.

I can't see any attacking from the main contenders until Luz Ardiden - it's just too risky at this stage.

Of course if any one of the really big contenders is in trouble for some reason then the rest of them might gang up on him. And the weather might make a difference.

But even if it does all kick off today then I humbly suggest your attitude is a little - how can I put this? - impatient.

Part of the excitement of watching a Grand Tour is waiting for something significant to happen. Days of waiting vainly for the race to explode and then BANG!

In bike racing, especially a Grand Tour, anything could happen at any time, especially on a mountain stage. The fact it usually doesn't just adds to the tension.

It's not a disappointment - it's a requirement, an intrinsic part of the experience.

                                .
