Ah Neil, I was just fishing.
That rug really tied the room together.

I know. That's why I was restrained (for me ).
      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Sadly I agree. I thought he was awesome back in 1984 though, really looked up to him.

He did a fantastic job with the Olympics though - regardless of cost.

I can't believe that Ennis came second. Mo Farah should've been in the top 3.

And seriously, why was Beckham involved? Just **** right off with that. Sick of him to be honest, cropping up everywhere like an STD.

I think that's strange because I'd have thought it might be of interest, yes. In an era when rocks are being turned over everywhere else and we're finding all sorts of scuttling insects underneath - MP's expenses, Libor, BBC, Operation Yewtree, Leveson/Murdoch/Hunt/Brooks/Coulson/Cameron, Hillsborough, Orgreave, corporate tax avoidance, individual tax avoidance, paedophile scandals - but the man who headed the organising the biggest sporting event in this country since 1966, no, in fact, ever, personally makes £10.8m by selling his (and William Hague's) company to a PR/marketing firm which played a major role in, and made a lot of money from, the Olympic Games...Move along, nothing to see here...

Has he broken the law? If not, then it is as relevent as Wiggins' highly questionable passion for the work of Paul Weller, or Beckham's inability to read out loud.

If he has broken the law, then he should be investigated using the proper channels.

As well as being honoured for being one of the middle distance greats, he was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to the UK (where many others regularly failed), and then it actually putting the thing on. And it was a massive success. Arguably the most succesful ever, depending on how you judge these things. The award was completely deserved for those feats alone.

By all means strip him of it if he is guilty of committing a crime.
                    Oh I don't know.

Er, Dom, as I said, I'd probably overlook it as things stand and I'm quite well aware of what he did. But I don't see why it's so difficult to take a rounded view of someone's work. The sale is dubious - the buyer is also extremely close to the Conservative Party, and has been since the days of Thatcher - and directly related to the Olympics, the very thing he is rightly (it goes without saying, you don't need to argue the point) being praised for. It was directly connected to the public role he held for which is he is justifiably getting high praise. But success does not mean we should forget less savoury aspects of his behaviour in the role, just as failure by someone doesn't mean we should ignore any partial or other achievements.

You didn't know about it. That was the point. Now you do.

Oh yeah, and the Weller analogy doesn't hold water. No one* is criticising Coe for his choice of friends or political idols but for a questionable business deal he concluded with a major supplier to Locog, the organisation which he was in charge of.

                        * Ok, maybe Nigey is but his brain, such as it is, is still whirring from all that spinning.

I enjoyed it overall. It was pretty saccharine and self-congratulatory as you'd expect, and parts were cringeworthy - especially the Poznan

Wiggins was of course a deserving winner and good value as ever with the speeches. I actually voted ...three times for Murray. Couldn't believe the outcry and surprise at Farah missing out - someone was always going to.

The team of the year award was an absolute joke, especially when you consider what the BBC published in terms of the rules and explicitly ruling out Team GB. I know they had the caveat that they reserved the right to change their minds (what on earth was the point in publishing the rules?!) but still. Team GB were not a team. The European Ryder Cup team, or even Team Sky (cycling), were robbed.

How funny was the Murray and Lennox Lewis incident

Saw some cunts on Twitter getting in a tizz over Murray being a potential winner, due to the 'personality' misnomer, further bleating that he didn't smile during his interview - and then when he did smile and laugh with Lennox Lewis, they mocked his smile FFS!

It really was an incredible year of sport, beautifully topped off with England's win in India. I enjoyed reliving much of it.

By the way, how did the BBC know Andy Murray was going to come third by having a trophy and guest waiting?
