They have 2 ways to play depending on the pace of the game, the ball that comes at them, newness of ball etc. They can "attack" and go after runs, or they can "defend" their wickets. Being able to do the latter successfully is called having a good defence.Originally posted by Daniel 7 View PostIts just what I've picked up from SSN. They refer to the batter as the defence
I'm guessing you misheard a commentator referring to the batsmans defence, not the teams.

It's like a boxer I suppose...can attack or defend depending on the situation. But the batters are absolutely not called 'the defence' in cricket. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Also where they play in the order should generally represent their relative strength.Originally posted by Alex View PostYou can have an attack or defense minded batsman. Trott is defensively minded, hates losing his wicket. But someone like Pietersen is attack minded and loves playing his shots.
A new ball on a fresh wicket moves very fast so can be more dangerous.
Opening batsmen are expected to defend to take the shine off it, so your openers should have the best defence. This is why the scoring usually starts slow. Although they often can strike the ball well these days, they're not expected to.
3 & 4 are generally halfway, they need to defend if your opener goes cheap, but usually by then you need them to start to attack and get runs.
By the time you hit 5 & 6 you want your players who are best at going after runs to get you a nice total..
Your bowlers then defend the total and attack the batsmen. The oppositions batsmen defend their wicket and attack the total.
5 days later you have a winner. If you're lucky.Last edited by EwarWoo; 24-07-13, 11:39 AM.
