Liverpool FC's Andy Carroll omitted from England U-21 squad

LIVERPOOL breathed a sigh of relief today after Andy Carroll was omitted from the England Under-21s squad for next month’s European Championships.

The £35million striker has been hampered by a knee problem in recent weeks and has been left out to rest the injury this summer.

Reds midfielder Jay Spearing also didn’t make Stuart Pearce’s final 23-man squad for the tournament in Denmark. The only Merseyside representative is Everton’s Jack Rodwell.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has been named in the 26-man senior squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on June 4 along with Blues duo Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka.

Bobby Zamora and Rio Ferdinand return to the set-up for the first time in 2011, while there is also a recall for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

Wayne Rooney is suspended so Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora are the forward options.

England squad: Scott Carson, Joe Hart, David Stockdale; Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, John Terry, Kyle Walker; Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Stewart Downing, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young; Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Bobby Zamora.

England Under-21s squad: Frankie Fielding (Derby County), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough), Alex McCarthy (Reading); Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jones (Blackburn Rovers), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea), Micah Richards (Manchester City), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur); Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Jack Cork (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Sunderland), Henri Lansbury (Arsenal), Fabrice Muamba (Bolton Wanderers), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Scott Sinclair (Swansea City); Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town)

Still looking forward to watching the U-21 tournament.

It'll be interesting to see our other 2 potential signings Jones and Wickham

Last time this tournament took place Ryan Babel tore it up and we signed him.

I had read that Liverpool were interested in him under Benitez for £5m yes, but that doesn't get away from the fact we were shafted by £20m and £90k a week for an unfit player.

If he had come in in the summer for between £15m and £20m I would never have needed to say the surplus was a horrendous waste of money.

He's barely played - that is some premium we've paid for a statement of intent, or to signal the return of Kenny Dalglish. Just seemed massively wasteful. Even £10m less, that could have gone on another defensive player.
I don't see why its such a problem how much he cost. In the January window we sold 2 players and bought 2 players and our net spend was 1million. Carrolls transfer fee has no bearing on future transfers or any transfers that could have been done in January because there would have been no time to bring in 2 or 3 players and get the paper work done in the few hours before the window closed.

For me, the only question is: Are Suarez and Carroll a better partnership then Torres and Ngog? And for me its a definite yes.

We have Dirk, Suarez and Carroll as our 3 strikers and each one offers something different. We can also play with all 3 in the starting 11. We no longer have a plan A and no plan B. We now have plans B and C which can only be a good thing.

As for his fitness, a full pre season with Kenny and the team after a rest in the summer will give us a different Andy Carroll imo

Someone's seen him limping heavily as well apparently, maybe just Twitter bollocks.
                    Are we winning?

We still don't know that Carroll is better than anyone. He hasn't played enough, hasn't been fit enough and has ambled about like a man with oak for legs. I just hope these reports of him limping heavily after he's been on holiday on the drink with Rooney and chums are exaggeration.

My problem with the money is that I would rather have seen better, proven players of higher quality come in than someone who has a career record no better than Dean Ashton's. In effect, an international quality forward proven in the Champion's LEague or international competition rather than someone who made his name in the Championship. Kenny Miller was a goalscorer at Championship level, as was Ashton and Marcus Stewart.

I wouldn't put it in those terms, but I agree that Carroll is still an unknown quantity with everything to prove.

Carroll was bought for his POTENTIAL. He is what? 22? We have signed him for at least 5 years. He has a record no better then Ashtons but how long has Carroll been playing in the premier league compared to Ashton?

We signed him when he was injured and he has been recovering from that injury for the back end of the season.

You would like an international quality proven forward? Look no further then the man who lines up next to Carroll.

Once upon a time Liverpool fans (maybe not you personally) complained that we never had the money to compete for the best players and the best young players. Now we DO have the money to compete and people complain because we paid too much

                          Comment

Well I would suggest that the complaints come from the fact we now do have the money but aren't competing for the best young players, rather over rated young English players at huge expense. It's not how much we've spent or are looking to spend, it's who we are getting for the outlay.
