He picked a bad time to revert back to decoy-mode.

Does he have a striker's instinct?
I compared to Ibrahimovic last week in terms of the way he drops deep and links play, popping up in areas which a striker of his stature normally doesn't. However, his positioning in the box is poor. Yet with Newcastle, they're always banging on about him being their No.9

My girlfriend is a Newcastle fan, so I saw a lot of Carroll before he came to us; they tailored their approach to get the most out of him - he was quite clearly the furthest man forward and they relied on the delivery of Barton and Nolan. He was very static and very much the focal point.Originally posted by Phoenix06 View PostDoes he have a striker's instinct?

Having seen the past and now the present, you can quite clearly see the hard work he is putting in to develop his game and his ability to drop deep and link up play is improving all the time. It's also why I cut him some slack with regards to his movement, because he has never had to drop off, then get in the box as he has always been there waiting. It's also why we will never see him check his run and go near or far post along the six yard line - it has never been part of his game, he's always been in the thick of it, attacking the ball with his head or feeding on the scraps from a goalmouth scramble.
And not aimed at you Phoenix - but for all the 'lazy' posts, perhaps we should look at what he has done previously, what he is doing now and all the hard work he has put in between.

I think Kenny has said something along the lines of 'no disrespect to Newcastle but we are helping Andy with his allround game' must be on this thread somewhere and that takes timeRIP IRWT

In which case he will never score a significant amount of goals for LFC so what's the point?Originally posted by Muddled View PostIt's also why we will never see him check his run and go near or far post along the six yard line - it has never been part of his game, he's always been in the thick of it, attacking the ball with his head or feeding on the scraps from a goalmouth scramble.
He's a hinderance, get shot fast.

Because he might be working hard to develop an understanding with Suarez to compliment each other?
Because not all goals are scored from the six yard line?

- I would have thought that if you are spending £35m on a striker you would buy a forward who can fit into your style of play and not one that requires us to change the way we play to accommodate him.
- If he is it isn't showing and it's been 12 months.
- You're right, I guess his 'hard work' and the other goals he is banging in make up for that.
You feel he will come good? Can I ask what you have seen to suggest this? And why you think we should waste time finding out?
I don't like slagging players but I have not seen anything at all to suggest he can be a success here.
If we got offered £20m I think the club would bite their hands off and rightly so.Last edited by BG1973; 05-03-12, 11:30 AM.

True he's been here for 12 months but he missed almost all of his time here last season through injury. The first half of this season he wasn't playing regularly (due to injuries and fitness problems), he only started playing regularly in the last 2-3 months and his performances in that time have been decent and steadily improving. If you look at his performances in this context you can draw different conclusions...Originally posted by BG1973 View Post- I would have thought that if you are spending £35m on a striker you would buy a forward who can fit into your style of play and not one that requires us to change the way we play to accommodate him.

I think if you take the £35m fee out of the equation it will help judge it objectively; we overpaid for Carroll – I understand that - but I think it leads to us benchmarking him against what we’d expect from a striker of that value.Originally posted by BG1973 View Post- I would have thought that if you are spending £35m on a striker you would buy a forward who can fit into your style of play and not one that requires us to change the way we play to accommodate him.

Look at his attributes: He is powerful, physical, a very good header of the ball, has a cannon of a left foot and is a great focal point of any attack. I’ve mentioned before (possibly in this thread) that I saw a lot of him at Newcastle due to my lady friend being a fan and having seen the mischief he caused amongst their opponents, gives me belief that he is a player in the making.
We bought him when he was injured, thus the back end of last season was hit and miss but he came on and generally caused a ruckus and gained fitness. This season is one with a full pre-season, in a team that is in transition amongst a team that are *all* learning a new style of play.
My reference to his ‘hard work’ is the effort he is putting in behind the scenes – as I’ve already mentioned, he’s come from a team where they were set-up to get the most out of his attributes, he is now working hard to develop other skills to compliment us as a footballing side. I think it’s fair to say that he’s reaping the rewards of this effort and his recent performances evidence that.
I think we need to show a little patience.

Unfortunately I don't think it's patience that is going to be rewarded.Originally posted by Muddled View PostI think if you take the £35m fee out of the equation it will help judge it objectively; we overpaid for Carroll – I understand that - but I think it leads to us benchmarking him against what we’d expect from a striker of that value.

You're talking about changing the way we play for one player yet that player doesn't even get in the first team. So that doesn't really make much sense.
If he's here in 12 months I'll be shocked.
