Post failure
hold my hand up and say it hasnt been great but the seasons not over yet and some players need more time. Obviously, the idea of buying an experienced english premier league player was that he would hit the ground running but instead he's hit the ground face first and never really got up.
Im not ready to give up on him just yet. Come on goowie, stewie. please please do something constructive. pretty please with sugar on the top.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

I'm just messing around! I dunno, in my eyes I knew he was going to be an epic failure just as Robbie keane was. Terrible signing and just didn't make any sense. At least with Henderson, it does make a tiny bit of sense as he is much younger and has potential.
Seriously though, give up!My kebab comes with chilli sauce

At least I gave him a fair crack of the whip.Originally posted by Tee View PostI am sure that someone on here once said that a right footed Downing would be a Championship player. Well, whatever I thought of him he is here or will be imminently so I can only but wish him the best and hope he proves himself.
He has failed miserably...so bad infact he makes Paul Stewart look like a shrewd purchase."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

All true, but we ignored the overriding principle of moneyball that Billy Bean has always employed with the Oakland A's - that is getting players on the cheap. Downing may have fit the sabremetrics/statistical model of what we were after, but at 20 mil, he was way outside of the "value" bracket of moneyball.Originally posted by Lecter View PostThen I dont know how you can possibly say what you have
Our whole approach is Moneyball/sabermetrics even more so when Bean is actually acquainted with Comolli and supposedly recommended him to our owners because of similar views on building teams through a shared method
The A's suck, btw, and have sucked for a decade now. Moneyball doesn't work. Using statistical info is important, but you must also have proper scouting (sorry Mr. Bean, but it's true) and spend money (lots of it) if you want to win these days - in any sport.

Of 25 PL games he has started 20 of them, come on as sub in 4 and been an unused sub once. Ok he's sat out alot of the Carling Cup games, but that is to be expected with a squad our size. In terms of PL games he started 20 of our first 22, it's only in the last 3 that he's been left on the bench.
He has been given plenty of opportunities and he doesn't have anyone else to blame but himself that he is turning to be a total disaster.
Many defended him early on when he showed some committment and put in some effort even when he had no assists or goals cause he was at least trying but as of late even that disappeared.
His confidence is gone and he is shadow of the player he was before we signed him up (not that he was brilliant then but he has never been this poor neither).
He offers absolutely nothing and atm he doesn't even deserve to be on the bench.
I hope he takes some accountability for his own actions as bitching and moaning about not be given enough of playing time or that manager doesn't understand him or that teammates don't like him is "cowardly" mentality.
Earn their respect and fans respect by leaving your heart on the pitch and even if things don't go his way keep trying so we can at least say that he is not in form and he is short on confidence but he is doing his best to get out of it.
Clearly we cannot say that and he should look himself in the mirror as there is where the blame lies.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Done some reading through this thread too. The slow progression of people realising what he really is...
The sad thing is, I laughed at the many posts like this when he signed. It was funny then, now it's painful.Originally posted by el matador View Postabsolutely fantastic news.
this lad will surprise a lot of people and will be a very effective player for us. dont expect flashy tricks or quadruple stepovers. what he will give us very very good delivery from the flanks, he will retain the ball very well and he will create goals galore for carroll, suarez and gerrard. His signing with charlie adam will also add a lot of balance to the team with agger, adam, carroll and downing all left footed.
i am delighted.
For everyone's sake I really hope he doesn't play for us too much again. Get Maxi back in there when Bellamy needs time off.

zap... hes still got time. kenny wont let him go this summer after just one season at anfield because nobody would pay even 10m for him.
after a very bright start hes been ****ing awful but there is still time. maybe he and enrique just cannot play together and then its a straight choice between them.
before writing him off I would try.him with aurelio against brighton just to see if he genuinely is crap or that hes not being helped by the fullback.
there cant be many worse things for a winger than a fullback who plays for himself.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

Downing is a lost cause me, should never be a starter for rest of the season. Apart from putting in absolutely poxy performances, he shows no passion, no desire & no balls, which for me is the worst thing. I've been harping on about this for awhile now, but i honestly didn't think his performances could get worse...... how wrong was i!!
This guy needs to be sold ASAP!! Regardless if we get 50% less, he is a complete and utter liability & i'm sure we are giving him silly wages, get him off the books and out of the car park!! His failure in a LFC shirt is no surprise to many bang average, always was and always will be.
Carroll & Henderson need to get their finger out as well, as both have been pretty average signing thus far too, sure their young but even that is wearing thin. In Downing & Henderson we surely have signed 2 of the most timid/placid players in the league. Carroll ain't far behind and i worry about his balance as a human being, sometimes it looks like he has vertigo, he should be bouncing defenders around. Many people not sold on Adam but his level of production in a deep and unfamiliar role has been excellent & he gets stuck in, even if he is very much clumsy!
Anyways in short Stuart Downing is an abomination of a signing and probably one of, if not the worst in the clubs history IMO.Last edited by danperkins; 14-02-12, 03:11 PM.

I sometimes wonder whether playing for Liverpool has the same effect on some players as playing for England does.
So many players come here and play worse than they did previous to joining, is it the pressure, some just can't hack it, can't settle down and play their natural game ?
edit: Ok i'm not talking about players in the above posts list obviously, i'm talking players that were good before they came, and it just didn't work. We seem to have had our fair share.Last edited by Vermilion; 14-02-12, 03:22 PM.

I always think that as well. I put it down to mentality...it is an aspect crucial for players coming to this club. If they are fearless and have a winning mentality they will succeed (obviously they will have to be good footballers as well!).Originally posted by Vermilion View PostI sometimes wonder whether playing for Liverpool has the same effect on some players as playing for England does.

Problem is we just have signed too many faint hearted donkeys like Downing, who are basically suited to being a big fish in a small pond."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley
