Downing struggled at Villa first season as well. I believe if he stays he'll do well next year.

As often said, we're it not for a bit of luck he could easily be on 8 goals and 8 assists.

Downing is clearly a confidence player and as such should never have been purchased, but I believe it to be unlikely that he will be so unlucky two seasons on the bounce if he sticks around.

I think what nick77 was saying was that he's feeling increasingly disillusioned with the club when mediocre mid table players like Downing and Henderson are bought for huge fees primarily for their nationality and then start game after game regardless of how much or little they contribute.
I don't blame him tbh, we are Liverpool FC - 5 time European winners and 18 time league winners. Since the end of last season we have basically become Martin O'Neil's Aston Villa - a largely British squad that languishes somewhere between mid table and top 4. That is not the Liverpool FC I know and love.

It's one thing feeling disillusioned with the team and manager but it's quite another to say you're considering throwing the towel in.

IMO he'd fit right in at Blackburn because hes an out and out chicken, both physically & mentally

Bad buy from day one and no one can't say that writing wasn't on the wall.

We need balance and he can provide that but it means that someone is going to have to come in off the right and be spectacular every match. At present we dont have this sort of player. Even if downing was shifted to the right and enabled johnson to push on we would still need someone electric on the left and then we would have the even bigger issue of him playing with enrique who is no help to anyone in front of him.
