I agree with Zapater, he was brilliant.

Can't believe you haven't seen his disappearing trick, its his favourite.Originally posted by Buzzo View PostThe amount of time Downing gets the ball in a promising position, looks up and see's a full back. Looks back and sees Enrique. Decides to pass back to Enrique and try to move into space. Enrique gets the ball with forwards closing in takes a heavy touch and ends up wresting with someone and the ball lamely trickles out for an opposition throw in is staggering.
Downing has no tricks at all. Not even one. He has a good cross on him, but can't ever get past his full back to deliver it. Totally pointless player.Brandt - Keita - Van Dijk - Sessegnon

I've been saying all season I think we'll see him (and the others) offer more when we have a more settled system, something that gives them well defined roles, this season is nearly over and we haven't figured out what our best system or team is yet.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

For £20m we should have been signing a player who will have a similar impact to Juan Mata at the Chavs.
Yes he's had no Carroll to aim crosses at, he's been moved around a bit, never played in a settled team or system and he's been damn unlucky with efforts on goal and quality crosses messed up by others.
But despite all the above, he is an England international and should have offered far more. Not been anywhere near the acceptable standard.
I think he'll be better next year if he stays, but I couldn't argue, nor would I care, if he was shipped out this summer.Forwards.......

The price is wrong but the player isnt bad. For 10m you would think ok. But at twenty it puts him in a different bracket in which he doesnt belong.
Solid hard working player who doesnt shirt his defensive duties. Has a very good engine too but you would need a different style of play to see the best of downing.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

I've a feeling our probelms run deeper than these two signings.Originally posted by Bender View Post£55million for downing and carroll could have got two world class players for that
The club still feels like it's in a rut. imo.
Maybe it's just all the negative reporting this season i don't know, but something still doesn't feel right, yet.
New owners should have kick started a new era, but it doesn't yet feel that way to me, it does'nt feel like we're on our way back.
Early days still i suppose ? but others forge ahead, which makes catching them all the harder.

Although his views are usually void of any value and substance, I had to chuckle at Andy Townsend saying how Downing was hiding in the game and he needs to try more things.
We've been saying that all season. At £10million, he would've been a sufficient squad player with little pressure and the ability to recoup the majority of the fee if we got rid.
Made two good crosses but that was it. I'm sick of his interviews too. If he wants to bang on about team rebuilding, he should stick videos on of Liverpool 2004-2008, AC Milan, Man Utd, Barcelona, dare I say it even Real Madrid. Look at teams who have built properly past and present rather than look for the nearest excuse.
