I don't think he is lazy either.

He is just not cut to play at the club of our magnitude.

That said I don't blame him so much.

It is not his fault that we paid stupid 20m and 70k per week to bring him here.

Didn't really like this public vilification - I would prefer we didn't see the means of rebuking a player. It almost seems like a populist, rabble rousing type of statement, kind of like picking on an easy target when its obvious that the majority of fans aren't happy with Downing.

Then, on the other hand, he could have knuckled down and gotten on with it rather than bleating through the press, shouting "Poor Me!"

      Faults on both sides.

Picking up on what Neil said, Downing was tracking back and providing cover for Glen, I saw that too. He was instrumental in Shelvey's goal, and yes, that is what you expect from an expensive purchase but he did look better. Was this the first game after he'd been bollocked by Brendan internally? If it was, its a bit harsh going through the press to criticise him.

Still don't like him much though.

And the fact he made one goal and laid on other chances... He did more than Assaidi. But somehow it was all Downing's fault we lost.

I give up. See what you want to see.

What a colossal waste of time.

While I don't normally like seeing players slagged off in public, I think it should only be used as a last resort. Obviously we don't know what has been said in private, but given his form since he signed for us whatever it was it hasn't worked, I think we've probably reached the point where this is the last resort, we have nothing to lose, if his form doesn't improve significantly he will be shipped out. (Assuming someone will take him...)
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Downing was one of the better players against Udinese, not a fan of his and was a dreadful signing but blaming him for everything is plain daft but ]

Of course, you could all be wrong.

I didn't mean my comment to sound harsh to you personally, Dane. I just think most people here are letting their general view of Downing colour their perceptions of his performance the other day and his recent comments that have been reported. Just like Hodgson can do no right, the same is true for Downing. I think that's not fair or reasonable, although in the case of Hodgson there's no reason to be either, because he's such a f*ckwit.

Anyway I agree it's a waste of time on a Sunday.

              Yes, I pretty much agree.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I think its a case of running out of ideas on how to get him to perform.

Lets face it, he has had one really good game in the fa cup semi. Other that that he has been average to very poor, and thats not good enough. Its got to a point were teenagers are consistantly outperforming him.

I think the manager just does not know what to do to get him to roll his socks up, so going public is the last straw.

And Downing response is terrible. He should have kept his mouth shut, and knuckled down. If he had to say anything, it should have been to agree that his performances have been poor, and that he would try harder. Instead he has disputed what the manager has said (never a good idea), and countered it by indicating he will carry on as he has been playing, and not adjust to how Rodgers wants him to play (well thats how I read it).

So not only is he deluded if he thinks he has been putting in good performances, he is stupid for publicly calling out the manager,

And his quote ...“Bravery is a lot of things,” he says. “It’s not just tackling, that’s not my game. But bravery is also taking the ball when you are losing the game and trying to create things. That’s what I try and do" was just stupid, because his effort when it comes to attacking is subpar. He hardly ever runs at his opponent, and rarely puts in an effective cross. He likes to lay it off. Could be down to confidence, but the first word that comes into my mind when thiking of Downing is "gutless".

I think its goodnight from Downing. And the biggest waste of money the club has ever spent, in my opinion.

He was terrible. He actually did a few things (which should be expected of a footballer on the pitch), but he was ****ing awful for most of the game. He wasn't the worst player on the pitch, but he was definitely one of the ****test and he cost us £20m.
