Well when loads were praising him for his performances at the start of the season you werent in the thread, now a bad game or two and you've arrived. It's hard to see it any differently.

I seem to remember that in the first few games of the season, Downing was laying of the ball and immediately setting of running past his man and getting played on down the wing time and time again...but that seems to have died out now, not seen him drop the ball off and set of on a sprint to receive the ball. Is it just due to the opposition we have played, or is it a mental thing either with the team, the individual or even the manager possibly feeling that it leaves us exposed if both Enrique and Downing are caught up field?

I think the issue is that Enrique and Downing are still getting use to each other and for now they are almost getting in away of one another.

Both like to run down the flank and if you add Suarez to that equation, who likes to operate on the left, we crowd the space to the point that we don't know what to do with the ball.

Once they learn to play with each other that will become a big advantage but presently it is still work in progress.

So what if someone jumps on a player for having some bad games? Its his/her right, like it is yours, to express an opinion. Can we not have a discussion about the player, and not about what poster thinks now, or back 2 months ago?

I was a bit worried about Downing on Saturday. It may have just been a bad game, but he didn't get involved enough for me. When Everton went down to 10 men Downing should have been looking to find space, but he had a pretty anonymous game really. I was sceptical when we signed him, but was won over once he played a few games in which I was really impressed. The thing I think he (and Adam/Henderson/Carroll) will need to realise is he is not at a club which can afford to carry passengers, he needs to be playing 100% every game. Downing should look at the appetite Bellamy brought when he came on and take it as a warning that he cannot coast. I think he has it in him to raise his game to the required level... the question is, does he?

Do you think its the Big Fish small pond scenario? He isnt a big fish here so he gets lost and doesnt think he needs to be the star in the team.

For what its worth I dont think he has been that bad. We have had a few worse players this year. But I think its all about a gelling process as Mostar says. I think he will come good, and that's from a person that couldn't stand him in his early career at Middlesbrough. Shamefully I used to call him 'Clowning the Cunt'

Think he is doing alright without pulling up trees. He has had one bad game against Spurs, but they all ****ing did then.

He was very poor against Everton mate.
