After a promising first couple of games, Downing is now playing at the level I always thought he was at.

£19m for a 27 year old who is only in the England squad because he's naturally left footed. Oh dear.

I think Downing would be really productive playing for Utd, he needs to be anchored to the left in a 442 though. Perhaps he was the wrong signing after all

inconsistent and run of the mill thus far, although playing him on the right does him and us no favours whatsoever.

I don't think he would, Young suits United tactics, they simply play to his strengths, Downing wouldn't fit there system in that way.

100 million spent in no time at all, and we're still struggling against teams like Norwich.

Sorry, but that just is'nt right! And i'm not sure any excuse is good enough.

As regards Young vs Downing, this is the last 5 seasons production levels, plus this season so far:

              Downing: Goals 20 Assists 33

              Young: Goals 32 Assists 60

Kinda speaks for itself really who got the better player

re Young, I don't think there's much point complaining cos we went for him but he chose United.

                No?

If so there's not a lot we can do about that.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I don't see the point in people keep going on about it TBH
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

And Young cost less than Downing which makes it even more irritating!

Downing is as mediocre as I initially thought he would be. He was pretty good the first couple of games which made me change my tone, too quickly it seems, and he has settled back into the form I've seen from him in any of his previous clubs.

Can't consistently beat a man, disappears from games and not a real goal threat. No right foot whatsoever.

Downing did good during pre season and in first games but has disappeared completely, and seems as inconsistent as he always was.

You could say the same about a few of our players

Yes but said players are not in the amazing England squad & cost 20 million squid, with the exception of Carroll who has plenty of time to turn things around...

True enough mate but each player should take responsibility for themselves.

My point is that, this specific position the Left Midfield. This has been a massive issue for us for over a decade now, we have filled it with stop gaps for so long, that we had a chance with funds available to finally sort this position out and nail it down once and for all. LB was the same and (fingers crossed) it looked like with the addition of Enrique, that we have address that major weakness over the last few seasons. I'd would have liked to see Enrique complimented with a top winger. But sure maybe it might champions league qualification for that to happen.

So we paid massive money for Stuart Downing, who we bought on the back of a good season last year, after several inconsistent and pretty average ones. I have no problem with the guy taking some time to settle, and for all our best players to get back to full fitness maybe to get the best out of Downing. But surely there comes a point where he has to start producing? I think it's perfectly valid that he should face a bit of constructive criticism for his performances thus far.

What is concerning not just myself is that this inconsistent and rather timid showing from Downing (who does have ability), is pretty much what he has been doing for most of his career.

Just for the record, i am 100% percent behind him & the likes of Henderson , even though IMO they won't hit it off at LFC (Henderson not a RM anyways). Downing has to start showing some productivity, he has got a good run of games and time for excuses are gone IMO.
