I made that same point few times beforeOriginally posted by Lecter View PostIts a real damned if you do, damned if you dont for FSG
I personally dont think we are attractive to players these days, and to get decent players we are probably going to have to offer financial incentives (overpay)
The fact that we cannot offer CL football now for 3rd year in row makes us very unattractive destination for "better" players and only way we can bridge that gap is if we offer over the odds wages.
Personally I don't see that likely solution as FSG said it in the past that they expect wages to go up but they do want to trim the fat and with likes of Aquilani, Cole, Downing etc it seems very unlikely we'll attract top talent before we offload those players.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

No I agree it means that they are looking at the players and placing an upper ceiling on their wage valueOriginally posted by pezzzer View PostIt doesn't necessarily mean they won't pay top dollar for proven quality though lec, let's face it he's had one good season so 30.000 a week is about right, overpaying for unproven players really started a downward spiral for us imo
Whilst I agree with this I do think if they are to entice decent/top quality players they probably will have to break this
If Sigurdsson wants £60K and we will only pay £30K he will more than likely go to Spurs who it appears have agreed to pay that amount
Equally if we are only prepared to pay Gaston Ramirez £X per week, then if someone is prepared to offer better wages than the upper limit we set he will go there
Football transfer market has become more competitive, we can no longer just trade on the basis that "we are LFC". The reality is we have very little to offer to players and maybe increasing our financial offers will be the only way to attract players that we face competition forLast edited by Lecter; 01-07-12, 11:49 AM.Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. He could also be the next Kewell or Joe Cole. I am happy with us offering him a good deal and seeing if he wants to sign for the club or follow the money. In my opinion (going on last season) Dempsey was a better player than Gylfi. My point being there is no reason to offer Gylfi a fortune because he has the potential to become much better, we offered him a wage on his current ability and I am happy with that.Originally posted by Bender View PostSigiurdsson is one of those gems [based on last season]

That is why I have been advocating doing deals (be it pay-offs etc..) to get them off our books and at least mitigate our losses and ensure the money is invested into the squad for players who we see as the way forwardBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'm not unhappy about what we offerred (unless it was the Swansea level which seems naff to me)Originally posted by SERVO1 View PostHe could also be the next Kewell or Joe Cole. That said if we are to hold our course in regards to wages then we should be prepared for more disappointment in the transfer window
In order to attract good / top quality players who we will no doubt face stiff competition for we will have to overpay / offer financial incentives as really we have little else to offer at this moment in timeBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. The question to be asked is what level of player is Gylfi? If there are question marks on his ability then we can not afford to pay huge wages as if he flops we wouldn't be able to move him on.
If we are sure he'll be a success then this is not so much of an issue. Personally, I feel he fits into the former. He has great potential, but so have many others who haven't progressed.
The player he is now is not one I'd personally say is a very good player, for instance I rate Dempsey higher. It's more about what he could become and may already be if put in a better team.Forwards.......

I'm very sceptical about the Gylfi situation, the media make up absolute ****e.
If we believe any of this story then we offered the same as Swansea which seems reasonable and then Spurs offered double?! Why would they do that? Finances don't make much sense in football, but I just find it hard to believe that another club would offer double the wages two other rival clubs are offering. It's just utter bull****. Watch him sign for Spurs tomorrow.

WE have so many overpaid players(relatively speaking obv.) that it's going to hurt us in negotiation until we can get rid, which is going to be really tough. Carra and Cole we'll just have to put up with for another season. But then we have the likes of Downing, Carroll and Henderson on serious money.
Glyfi's agent will feel his player deserves at least parity with someone like Henderson and unless we meet that, the agent and his player are going to feel undervalued. Then if someone else offers him £60k, we either come up with a counter offer that isn't taking the piss or we move on.

which other players would that be i wonder.
