sounds like it was a rushed purchase as opposed to target that was clearly identified.Originally posted by Chazza View PostPaid £6m for Dempsey sold him for $9m after one season 29 league games 7 goals. While Suárez was being put through his paces at Melwood, Liverpool were involved in talks with Anzhi Makhachkala as they stepped up their bid to sign Willian, who is also attracting interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Willian has become Rodgers’s main transfer target after being made available by Anzhi, but with no Champions League football to offer the Brazil forward, Liverpool are aware that they face a battle to tempt him to Anfield.
They remain hopeful that a deal can be concluded for the 25-year-old, however, and were last night believed to be close to agreeing a fee in the region of £30 million for a player who is widely regarded as one of the most talented in Russia at present.
While negotiations continue on that transfer, Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Valencia in which they will sign Aly Cissokho on loan for a season with a view to a permanent £4 million move for the left back.
Cissokho’s arrival will satisfy Rodgers, who believes that he needs to add to his squad before the transfer window closes on September 2.
“We need quality,” the Liverpool manager said. “We just want to add that. We’ve obviously worked hard to try to get one or two players in and it hasn’t quite materialised.”
Missing out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the Armenia midfielder who moved to Borussia Dortmund, and Diego Costa, the Brazil striker who signed a new contract with Atlético Madrid, were damaging blows to Liverpool, who once again discovered the difficulties of attracting players while exiled from the Champions League.

Both did ok for Spurs last season. Sigursson improved second half of season & Dempsey scored 13 goals for them and sure they got ok money for Dempsey to Seattle so didn't lose much.Originally posted by el matador View PostMind you im glad they beat us to sigurdsson and Dempsey because gylfi's not very good and Dempsey went back to the MLS a week ago.
That's 15m pissed up the wall.

Ah, the old "Spurs copy us" comedy routine.
If you're fishing in the same pond, you're fighting for the same fish..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

both deals seemed odd. Dempsey played off the central striker for Fulham in his last season there and did well but spurs bought him sigurdsson and dembele I think one window.Originally posted by danperkins View PostBoth did ok for Spurs last season. All of them like to play behind the striker but there's only one position available unless AVB has invented a new formation with allows them to play with three no.10s.
both sigurdsson and Dempsey ended up playing wide which didn't suit any of them really.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

Liverpool set to make £30m Willian their second most expensive player ever as they move ahead of Spurs in race for Anzhi star
By DOMINIC KING
Liverpool look set to beat off Tottenham and Manchester United in the £30million race to sign Willian.
Both Liverpool and Tottenham have entered into talks with Anzhi Mackhachkala for the Brazil international but it appears Willian is leaning more towards a move to Anfield.
If Liverpool can complete a deal for the 25-year-old, Willian would become the second most expensive acquisition in the club's history and he would become the marquee signing that manager Brendan Rodgers has been desperate to make all summer.
It would also represent something of a coup for Liverpool, given that Manchester United registered their interest and Tottenham are in a position to offer him European football.
Willian had told ESPN Brazil, after being informed of Liverpool's interest earlier this week that he was 'very calm and just waiting for the best' and also described Liverpool as 'a great club'.
He has had his heart set on a move to England since it became apparent Anzhi Makhachkala would have to sell, having been beset by financial problems.
Rodgers has been anxious to give his squad more quality and depth and the arrival of Willian, who won the UEFA Cup during his time with Shakhtar Donetsk, would provide that. Liverpool are also on the verge of wrapping up a season-long loan move for Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho subject to a medical.

Both did ok though and Sigursson does have talent. Dempsey was always going to be a short term buy... 12 goals in all comps and sold for nice price. Not too shabby bit of business.Originally posted by el matador View Postboth deals seemed odd.
