Liverpool will make a formal bid for Basel winger Mohamed Salah this week. The club have been planning a move for the Egyptian since the January transfer window opened, but the valuation of £12 million has been prohibitive.

However, negotiations will step up with the Swiss side in the next few days, with manager Brendan Rodgers hoping to make a significant purchase. Ideally, he would like to add a defender to his squad, too, the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday highlighting the major lingering deficiencies at the back.

The impressive, composed debut of Aston Villa’s Ryan Bertrand – who is on loan from Chelsea and has been a long-term target for Rodgers – was in contrast to Liverpool’s problems at full back over recent weeks.

We need a left & right back and defensive midfielder. Not really another attacking midfielder. Salah seems a good player and we should go after him but surely an attack mid is not our priority?

Gerrard is useless sitting deep, hes too lazy and hasnt got the legs anymore. Lucas is injured again and has not been the same since his last injury. Allen has potential but we need more options.

Our midfield balance should be the concern first, not a left back. Salah might be part of addressing that concern if for example he's good positionally and does his pressing duties well.

All this talk about priority signing, what if we are looking for a left back and center mid at the same time? its not like we're incapable of scouting more than 1 player at a time. If there are no suitable CM's or LB's available should we just say actually lets not sign a winger who is available that we're interesting in because there are no left backs? its madness.

Everything the club does is documented on this forum. If it doesn't state on here that we're looking for a defensive minded midfielder or left back, then you can take that to the bank

Can Salah play on the left? We do end up playing Coutinho on the left more often than not. Getting in Salah and a defensive midfielder would address the balance somewhat. Sakho, Enrique and Flanagan will be back soon so maybe that gets us to the summer.
